Missile Mistake???
US sent Taiwan missile components by mistake: Pentagon
1 day ago
WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States mistakenly sent Taiwan four fuses used in triggers for nuclear weapons in the fall of 2006 and only discovered the mistake last week, the Pentagon said Tuesday.
The fuses were recovered Monday from Taiwan where they were believed to have been held in storage after being mistakenly shipped as helicopter batteries from a Defense Department logistics facility, senior Pentagon officials said.
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered an investigation into the incident and a comprehensive review of all nuclear-related components in the US inventory, senior officials said.
It was the second major nuclear security breach uncovered in just over six months, following the mistaken transfer of...

Taipei, Beijing Agree on Cross-Strait Travel
CHEN:
China and Taiwan hold their first talks in almost a decade. The often bitter rivals avoided sensitive political issues but agreed to regular direct flights between the two from the beginning of July.
STORY:
Top officials from both Taiwan and China announced they had reached an agreement on all provisions regarding the launch of weekend cross-Taiwan Strait charter and tourist flights.
They say that planned regular flights, the first in nearly 60 years, would be starting from July 4.
There are currently no direct flights between China and Taiwan except on major holidays, meaning the hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese who live and work in China have to make time-consuming flights via Hong Kong, Macau or other third territories.
China has agreed to allow tour groups of up to ten...

Taiwan Releases Chinese Military Study
WONG:
On Tuesday Taiwan's Ministry of Defense released new findings of exactly how much military equipment the CCP has in the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwanese government alleges that anti-satellite weapons, aircraft carriers and more are in place for a possible attack on the democratic island. But what's most concerning to Taiwan is that the shear amount of the munitions is much more than is actually needed for an invasion.
CCP defense expenditures are almost 2-3 times larger than publicly released figures figured, which has people like Colonel Jianhua Gong worried.
[Colonel Jianhua Gong, Taiwanese Ministry of Defense]: 2nd quote gender unknown
"The CCP had made use of the Taiwan Strait issue to actively develop anti-satellite weapons, missiles, and aircraft carriers. The developed force...

UN Membership for Taiwan
Taiwan deserves membership in the United Nations.
"I'm one of those people that call myself Taiwanese, not Chinese, and will school anyone that tries to tell me otherwise.
And I'm angry--angry at the power-hungry, oppressive Chinese Nationalist government that has been the source of such identity fraud. And while the historical claims to power are disputable, what cannot be denied are the corrupt politics and 40+ years of repressive martial law, targeted massacre of over 20,000 of the country's most educated, imprisonment and execution of perceived political dissidence, attempted extinction of the Taiwanese language, and continual use of missiles pointed at the island as a threat. What's more is the fact that Taiwan has been a thriving sovereignty with one of the world's strongest...

China in U.S. Campaign Politics: Part 6 of Election 08 and the Challenge of China
The opening segment documents the importance of the U.S.-China relationship and its complexity. China has the fastest growing large economy, has become the top producer of greenhouse gases, and is increasingly prominent in negotiations to limit the spread of nuclear weapons.
Its a well-established tradition for candidates to criticize how the current president has dealt with China. These candidates complain that the president has been too easy on or to close to China. Upon moving into the White House, presidents have found it necessary to forge stronger ties with China in order to achieve other aims. This segment reviews nearly thirty years of candidate statements and presidential policies.

Taiwan and China's Military Buildup: Part 4 of Election 08 and the Challenge of China
The U.S.-China relationship is complicated and is vital for both countries and the world. Where do Senators McCain and Obama stand on U.S.-China trade, security, environmental, and human rights issues? How important has policy toward China been in past elections and in 2008? These are the questions explored in a USC U.S.-China Institute documentary.
Taiwan is routinely cited by Chinese as one of the issues most likely to produce conflict between the U.S. and China. The U.S. supplies weapons to Taiwans military, but the American government has firmly opposed any Taiwan declaration of independence. The U.S. calls on the officials on both sides of the strait to work collaboratively towards a peaceful and enduring resolution of Taiwans status. Since the end of U.S.-Taiwan relations, Taiwan...

taiwan goes nuclear ?
what's the message between the lines? I don't think this is a mistake, neither do I believe that Taiwan didn't analyze the device. like Israel, a covert nation with nuclear weapons, Taiwan now has the nuclear capability to strike back if it is attacked. What is here the message to China? No more threat of "reunification by force".

U.S. Approval of Arm Sales to Taiwan
Hold on baby, here I come!
*The U.S. government on Friday announced plans to sell around $6.5 billion in arms to Taiwan, including 30 Boeing Apache attack helicopters, 330 Patriot missiles and 32 Harpoon submarine-launched missiles. The Pentagon said the arms sales were consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act, which obliges Washington to help Taipei defend itself. The deals were announced after what analysts had described as a freeze designed to ease tension between Beijing and Taipei, and were quickly lauded in Taiwan. While China is likely to protest to the deal, analysts said that the sale was unlikely to increase tensions between Beijing and Washington since the approval comes near the end of U.S. President George W. Bushs administration. China sees the self-ruled, democratic island...

Chinese today enjoy great freedom in their everyday lives, but Americans of all political leanings express concern about Chinas human rights record. The Chinese governments suppression of demonstrations and riots in and near Tibet in March again focused attention on the issue, as did restrictions on demonstrations during the Olympic Games. Like his predecessors, President George W. Bush has met with Chinese political, religious, and labor...
