US Welcomes North Korea Nuclear Declaration North Korea's long-awaited nuclear declaration and the U.S. response to lift certain sanctions against Pyongyang is the first step in a long verification process aimed at creating a nuclear-free Korean peninsula. The actions also represent a turnaround in the Bush administration's policy toward the North Korean regime, once branded by President Bush as part of an "axis of evil." More from VOA's Bill Rodgers. Inter - Korean Cooperation Grows - VOA Story From trains to tourism, from industry to sports, cooperation between the two Koreas is picking up momentum again, less than a year after the North tested its first nuclear weapon. As trains rolled across the inter-Korean border in May for the first time in 57 years, South Korea celebrated with fanfare. The test of the railway is a symbol of a resurgence in inter-Korean cooperation. The two countries have never formally ended their 1950s war. Although relations have improved since 2000, ties cooled abruptly last October, when the North tested its first nuclear weapon. But now, the South is pushing ahead with its policy of economic engagement with the impoverished North. Seoul is expanding an industrial park in the North Korean city of Kaesong. Thousands of North Koreans work there in... Tags: Korea, Korean, nuclear, Pyongyang, Seoul, weapon |

N. Korea talks halted as country's rep. walks out Hello. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline on this Thursday, March 22, 2007. Talks over North Korea's nuclear weapons program came to a standstill today as the country's negotiator walked out of the meeting. North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister left the six-party talks in Beijing and took a flight to Pyongyang. The country has said it will not proceed with abandoning its nuclear program until its $25 million in frozen assets are freed from the bank in Macao. The funds were originally frozen because the U.S. alleged the money was part of a counterfeiting ploy. A South Korean news agency reports the money hasn't been freed because of minor technical problems. Two people are dead after an explosion aboard a British navy submarine beneath the Arctic ice cap. Officials are... Tags: Ahmed, British, dead, female, Iraq, Korea, Mogadishu, Moqtada, navy, North, nuclear, Sadr, Shibani, Somalia, submarine |

Korea's War of Words ANCHOR: North Korea has lashed out at the new conservative government in Seoul and its ally the US by test firing missiles, expelling South Korean officials at a factory park in the north, threatening to slow down a nuclear disarmament deal. Heres the full story. STORY: Pomp and ceremony to welcome South Korea's new military official. But with the new chairman of joint chiefs of staff, comes a tougher stance on North Korea. [Kim Tae-Young, South Korea's New Chairman of Joint chiefs of Staff]; "North Korea's nuclear problem has not been resolved yet. So our army should firmly and decisively cope with any threats and challenges to guarantee our national security and people's lives and property." And it's this comment that has got North Korea riled. Over the past few days, the North has... Tags: conservative, firing, government, korea, missiles, north, ntdtv, seoul, south, threat |
