Grim Future for Taiwan’s Defenses

Ambassador Young brought a blunt message from the Bush Administration: Taiwan’s lawmakers “need” to pass a “robust defense budget” in the current legislative session. The United States is not concerned about specific systems but is concerned by the general malaise among Taiwan’s political parties concerning the island’s defenses. Taiwan’s defenses are collapsing while China’s are expanding at breathtaking speed.

	Taiwan holds largest military exercise in years Taiwan held its largest military exercise in 20 years on last Thursday in Northern Taiwan. The Han Kuang military exercises are held every year to counter a potential invasion by China. President Chen Shui-bian spoke after the military exercises, saying the drills were a success. He also took the opportunity to once again call on the legislature to pass a budget for the purchase of weapons from the United States. Chen said the arms are necessary to enhance the nation's defenses. Chen said Taiwan's allies -- including the United States and Japan -- are concerned about Taiwan's ability to defend itself against an attack from China.
