NY Philharmonic gives concert in North Korea
Hi, I'm Kristin Volk with you UPI news headline on this Tuesday, the 26 day of February 2008.
The New York Philharmonic is now the first major American cultural group to have performed in North Korea. The orchestra began the performance earlier today with North Korea's national anthem and continued with The Star-Spangled Banner. Both reportedly received standing ovations. North Korean leader Kim Jong Il apparently wasn't in attendance. The U.S. government agreed on the Philharmonic's visit when there was major progress to end the country's nuclear weapons program.

A key Republican senator is urging President Bush to change his course on Iraq. Senator Richard Lugar says the direction in Iraq has lost contact with the national security interests of the U.S. in the Middle East. He added that the chances of the U.S. troop surge there succeeding are very limited within the short timeframe set by Congress. The Indiana lawmaker says the U.S. military role in Iraq must be reduced and there needs to be more emphasis on diplomatic and economic options.

Officials say N. Korea helped Syria build reactor
Hello, I'm Kristin Volk on this Thursday, the 24 day of April 2008 with a UPI news update.
U.S. officials will tell lawmakers on Capitol Hill today that North Korea helped Syria build a nuclear reactor. The U.S. reportedly has video footage of a suspected nuclear reactor site in Syria with North Koreans inside. That site was destroyed by Israeli warplanes last September. Syria has repeatedly denied that it has any nuclear weapons program or any agreement with North Korea.
President Bush will nominate his top Iraq commander to lead U.S. military operations throughout the Middle East. Army General David Petraeus will become head of Central Command. Lieutenant General Raymond Odierno who's the number 2 commander in Iraq will take Petraeus' current job. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said...
