NY Philharmonic gives concert in North Korea
Hi, I'm Kristin Volk with you UPI news headline on this Tuesday, the 26 day of February 2008.
The New York Philharmonic is now the first major American cultural group to have performed in North Korea. The orchestra began the performance earlier today with North Korea's national anthem and continued with The Star-Spangled Banner. Both reportedly received standing ovations. North Korean leader Kim Jong Il apparently wasn't in attendance. The U.S. government agreed on the Philharmonic's visit when there was major progress to end the country's nuclear weapons program.
Thousands of Palestinian protesters are calling for an end to an Israeli blockade on Gaza. They're burning tires and forming a human chain with nearly 40 thousand people along the strip's 25-mile length. Israel has threatened...

GOP senator asking Bush to change course on Iraq
Hello. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline on this Tuesday, June 26, 2007.
A key Republican senator is urging President Bush to change his course on Iraq. Senator Richard Lugar says the direction in Iraq has lost contact with the national security interests of the U.S. in the Middle East. He added that the chances of the U.S. troop surge there succeeding are very limited within the short timeframe set by Congress. The Indiana lawmaker says the U.S. military role in Iraq must be reduced and there needs to be more emphasis on diplomatic and economic options.
Nuclear inspectors are in North Korea today for the first time in five years. The country issued an invitation 10 days ago to discuss the shutdown of North Korea's nuclear reactor at Yongbyon. Chief U.S. nuclear negotiator...
