The Culture of Missile Defense

Posted by Matt in November 30th, 2006

Today, the specter of destruction falling from the sky is back. It could come at any time, in any place, and for no reason. Many are asking what should be done about it. But the real question is what can be done.

Today, the specter of destruction falling from the sky is back. The US enjoyed a decade’s respite after the fall of the Soviet Union during which American air superiority ensured that virtually no enemy bomb squadron could achieve a successful attack. But today, with Iran’s dubiously peaceful nuclear program and with North Korea’s recent long-range missile test, the possibility of an unconventional ballistic missile reaching American soil is no longer just the remnants of a Cold war nightmare.

General Dynamics FIM-43 Redeye Missile
The General Dynamics FIM-43 Redeye was a man-portable surface-to-air missile system. It used infrared homing to track its target. Production was terminated in September 1969 after about 85,000 rounds had been built - in anticipation of the Redeye II, that would later become the FIM-92 Stinger. The Redeye was withdrawn gradually between 1982 and 1995 as the Stinger was deployed. Development In 1948 the United States Army began looking for new infantry air-defense weapons, as machine guns were proving ineffective against new fast jets. Several gun/rocket systems were investigated but none showed enough promise to pursue. In the mid 1950s Convair began studies of a man portable infrared guided missile. In November 1956 the results of these studies were shown to the US Army and USMC. In...

Pershing 1a Missile (1977)
*** THIS FILM WAS MADE MY THE US GOVERNMENT AND IS PUBLIC DOMAIN *** Pershing was a family of solid-fueled two-stage medium-range ballistic missiles designed and built by Martin Marietta to replace the Redstone missile as the United States Army's primary theater-level weapon. It was named for General John J. Pershing. The systems were managed by the US Army Missile Command (MICOM) and deployed by the United States Army Field Artillery Corps. Pershing Ia In 1964, a series of operational tests and follow-on tests were performed to determine the reliability of the Pershing 1. Europe's Missile Shield (1/2)
The United States' push to build a defensive missile shield in Europe is threatening a new Cold War between two old superpowers. America wants the Polish and Czech governments to provide bases for the project and they're prepared to invest billions of dollars to make it happen. The Russians fear the new missile system is aimed at them. They've warned governments in Warsaw and Prague that should they side with the Americans, Russian missiles would in turn be aimed at their cities. Russia's former Army Chief of Staff General Leonid Ivashov tells Moscow-based correspondent, Scott Bevan, "I told the Poles, do not think that Russia will strike just at these sites (the US bases) - the first strike will be in Warsaw and Gdansk and other cities." Bevan has been given rare access to the...

Profile of a General - Pakistan
April 2000 In this exclusive profile of General Musharraf, the military leader who took control of Pakistan in a bloodless coup in 1999, there is damning evidence of Pakistani support for the Islamic Terrorist group Mujahadeen led by the world's most wanted criminal - Osama Bin Laden. His view is clear: "there's a total genocide going on in Kashmir! They are killing the civilians! .. the people of Kashmir have risen against the Indians. They don't want the Indians there." And the next war could be nuclear. Major towns in Pakistan display Replica nuclear missiles standing like monuments. From Islamabad's Faisal mosque, we uncover the fundraising stalls of Islamic groups waging a guerrilla war against India in Kashmir. The United States claims they're covertly bankrolled by Pakistan...

Lance Missile
*** THIS FILM WAS MADE MY THE US GOVERMENT AND IS PUBLIC DOMAIN *** The LANCE was a mobile field artillery tactical missile system used to provide both nuclear and non-nuclear general fire support to the Army Corps. Designed to attack key enemy targets beyond the range of cannon artillery and to reinforce the fires of other artillery units, the LANCE replaced the HONEST JOHN system, fielded in 1954, and the SERGEANT system, deployed in 1962. It filled the U.S. Army's need for a highly mobile, medium-range, fin stabilized, all weather, surface-to-surface missile weapon system. The LANCE's primary mission targets included enemy missile firing positions, airfields, transportation centers, command and logistic installations, critical terrain features (defiles, bridgeheads, main supply...

Rise of the Triad: Dark War - E1B7 (General Darian)
Meant to be a true sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, ROTT, made by Apogee Software, eventually evolved into a completely different game, one with funny elements, and also introduced us to the 'Ludicrous Gibs!'. Well, here is the first boss stage! General Darian is pretty hard, and yes he's the guy that coined the famous "They'll bury you in a lunchbox!" phrase. Of course, I end up covering all the other spots where he teleports out of, preventing him from teleporting, but since I did it before he left the central room (with the Asbestos Armor, Heatseekers, and Oscuro Key), It took a while to get the General to open a door so I can get the armor, then proceed to blast the heck out of him with Fire Bomb and Heatseeker missiles. At one point, I was trying to push a column around which would not...

Russian general warns Georgia over Abkhazia
Russian general warns Georgia over Abkhazia WATCH VIDEO Source: CCTV.com | 06-20-2008 09:19 A senior Russian general has warned Georgia's breakaway province of Abkhazia that Russian peacekeepers in the region will not maintain restraint if they continue to face provocation. The threat came in response to the brief detention of four peacekeepers near Abkhazia, sparking an angry response from Moscow. A senior Russian military official said Georgian police detained a group of Russian peacekeepers on Tuesday. Georgia claimed they were transporting weapons without permission. Alexander Burutin, Lieutenant General, said, "In the future we cannot guarantee that our servicemen will act in this patient manner. Their patience is not limitless. The consequences will be grave and there could be...

Iran Missile Program (IranVNC.com)
This week, Iranian official sources announced that Iran has started to arm the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps artilleries with state-of-the-art smart munitions and cluster shells, to which IRGC forces would "overwhelm invaders with their fire power." Iran's current missile system of Shahab-1, Shahab-2, and the new No Dong (North Korea) rockets are capable of firing deep into Europe. Stopping the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear missiles of this reach is the basis of the debate over Iran's uranium enrichment program. The Shahab missiles, according to Iran's military officials are aimed at Israel, ready to retaliate should Israel decide to launch a preemptive strike. "Israel is located entirely within our reach of our missiles. Our missile power is such that the Zionist...
