ALMATY. The Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) has all reasons to become one of the most important bases for a new global order. Kassymzhomart Tokayev, Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, has stated this in a welcoming address to participants of an international conference “The SCO: Results and Perspectives”, read by Kairat Abdrakhmanov, Vice Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan Today correspondent reports.
“The current year, 2006 is very special for our organisation. We have marked the fifth anniversary of the SCO and the tenth anniversary of the “Shanghai Five”, - the address by Tokayev says. In his view, for such a brief term the SCO has become a full-fledged important international organisation.

"I am amazed that the West simply ignored the fact that Georgian armed forces attacked the peaceful city of Tskhinvali [in South Ossetia]. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental international organization founded in Shanghai on 15 June 2001 by six countries: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Its member states cover an area of over 30 million km2, or about three fifths of Eurasia, with a population of 1.455 billion, about a quarter of the world's total. Its working languages are Chinese and Russian.
SCO's predecessor, the Shanghai Five mechanism, originated and grew from the endeavor by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to strengthen confidence-building and disarmament in the border regions. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is an intergovernmental mutual-security organization which was founded in 2001 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Except for Uzbekistan, the other countries had been members of the Shanghai Five, founded in 1996; after the inclusion of Uzbekistan in 2001, the members renamed the organization.
