South Korea braces for changes in military alliance with U.S.

Posted by Matt in December 14th, 2006

SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Yonhap) — The long-standing alliance between South Korea and the U.S. faced a host of challenges in recent years as the former demanded greater independence from the latter and the two sides had to hammer out a vision for a new partnership.

In 2006, Seoul and Washington managed to lay the groundwork for shaping a new military alliance in a changing security environment, but Seoul needs to prepare to avoid pitfalls ahead, analysts said.

“This year, we saw the biggest change in the Seoul-Washington alliance yet, not only out of our necessity but also because of change in the U.S. military policy. It’s so natural and also unavoidable,” said Lee Chul-ki, who teaches international relations at Dongguk University.

North Korea army parade
Here's something you don't see every day. This is a mashup of adorable propaganda videos I found via URL hacking on the web site of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in November 2004. These videos were removed from the site (perhaps, I speculate, because of the translation errors in the narration, particularly involving Kim Jong-Il's title). You can see plenty of Soviet and Chinese cultural and politcal influence, overlaid on Korea's basically conservative, Confucian, authoritarian mind-set. Transcript: "... independent, self supporting and self reliant and national defense. The parading units start marching across the square amid resounding cheers. Columns from military schools of different levels are marching proudly, demonstrating the vitality of the party's line of making...

Korean man-power troops claim they can defeat USA
North Korean military forces consist of man-power, besides, they really think they are stronger than any other country, such as USA, Japan, and so on. North Korea is equal in absurdness and childishness to South Korea.

Republic of Korea military (South Korea) v2
Enjoy. The ROK military is the 6th largest military in the world (by active troops) with 687,000 active soldiers, but has additional 4,500,000 trained reservists. *Note: After watching through this video carefully, I noticed that I made an error in between 2:55 and 3:04. Some of the aircraft that are shown include foreign fighters that are not part of the Korean Air Force.

kyuksuldo Well combined Taekwondo, Judo, Hapkido, even kickboxing. Utilize banned skills from Taekwondo. ------------------------------------ The reason I think this is well combined is the ratio of ground grappling and striking. Its emphasis on striking and taking down is awesome. In this demonstration you can even see the guy striking groin. Unless one to one, no weapon, no groin, no eye poking rule, it is better not to go to ground in either battle field or in the street(especially when there are multiple opponents). However, they do not completely ignore the ground work. Considering this system had developed long before the current boom of MMA, I think they did very well done in forming a new system.(they also seemed to be very proficient on techniques they perform)

70th anniversary of the North Korean army - Military Parade
North Korean military band performing at the "90th birthday of late Kim Il-sung and the 70th anniversary of the founding of Korean People's Army" North Korean Military Parade Pyongyang, April 25, 2002 Well, more militia then regular army parade. Since it was a TV broadcast, commentary overlaps the footage partially. P.S - Just to clear things up about the Korean Peoples Army being 70 years old (at the time of this parade) despite the fact the DPRK came into existence after World War II. A propaganda quote on the 25/4/2002 from the Korean Central News Agency of the DPRK's English website: "KPA, revolutionary armed forces Pyongyang, April 25 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean People's Army. On the occasion all the officers and men of the people's army and...

With nearly 1.2 million soldiers, the secretive Communist state has one of the largest standing armies in the world, but many conscripts were put to festive use in this massive display in the capital, Pyongyang. But the crippled economy has left the military short of food for its soldiers as well as lacking fuel and parts for its tanks, planes and ships

South Korean Military in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq
The South Korean military has deployed over 1,000 troops in the Kurdish region of Iraq. Though they are part of the multinational force, the soldiers do not patrol the streets or take part in combat operations. Instead, the South Koreans teach local Iraqis new skills, from repairing cars to baking cakes. VOA's Brian Padden recently visited the South Korean base known as Camp Zaytun and files this report.
