Jordan`s king warns of war

Posted by Matt in December 19th, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) — After holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmnet in the Jordanian capital, Amman, Tuesday, King Abdullah of Jordan warned that in the absence of a prompt resolution to the longstanding Middle East conflict, everyone in the region will lose.

Several political experts go further, warning that the harm caused by a renewed Middle East war would have the potential to traverse the region`s borders, spilling over into Europe, and Africa — which is already infiltrated by numerous al-Qaida operatives.

The roots of the war in October 1973 between Israel, Egypt and Syria date back to another conflict, the Six-Day War. On 5th June 1967, Israel pre-emptively attacked Egypt, swiftly followed by attacks on Syria and Jordan. The Israeli Air Force paralysed the Arab air forces and the Israeli Army routed the Arab armies. In just six days, Israel had seized control of vast swathes of territory, including the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt and the...

Blood and Oil - Middle East in WWI Pt 1: Surprise Attack
Part 1 - Surprise Attack. Enver Pasha, minister of war for the Ottoman Empire, agrees to a secret alliance with Germany in August 1914. Istanbul mobilizes its army but remains neutral for nearly three months. Eager for a fight against Russia, Enver orders the Turkish Black Sea Fleet to bombard Russian seaports on October 29th. The Triple Entente -- France, Russia and Great Britain -- reacts swiftly and declares war against the Turks within a week. Except for the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaigns, the extensive combat operations in the Middle East during World War I have been largely overlooked in documentary programs. Given the historical significance of the Ottoman Empire's demise in 1918, and the ongoing importance of Middle Eastern oil reserves to Western economies, a close study of...
