Oil Threatens Nenets - Russia
May 1996
On the Arctic plains, the Nenet tribespeople are gathering for a unique festival. Skidding across the frozen Tundra in sleds pulled by furry reindeer, they celebrate an antique culture which Communism failed to destroy. After herding reindeer through the white daylight hours, they shelter from the Arctic freeze in leather Tee Pees, eating raw fish and drinking frozen streamwater. But as the elders crouch by their smoky fires, they talk anxiously about a multi-billion dollar pipeline project. American oil giant Amoco and the Russian Gazprom pose the biggest threat to their nomadic lifestyle since Stalin. Timofei, a Nenet leader, is despondent: 'they will take all the gas and leave all the rubbish'. Promises by the oil companies to preserve the landscape are viewed with scepticism....

Russian economy: safe haven or oil bubble?
As the US economy has already fallen into a recession, according to the majority of economists, and the European one doesn't feel well, the so-called BRIC countries -- Brazil, Russia, India and China -- are attracting more and more foreign investors. Is Russia a truly safe haven in the troubled waters of the world economy? How will the current crisis affect Russian economic development? To answer these questions, our guest today is Aleksey Novikov.

Global Pulse - 10/30/08: Axis Of Oil: Iran, Venezuela, Russia
October 30, 2008) Riding high this summer, three oil-producing nations sharing a disdain for the U.S. used their petro-dollars to fund policies not in the super-power's playbook. However, with the abrupt change of worldwide, economic fortunes, oil states now have headaches of their own. Venezuela's Chavez, who blustered and spread the wealth, has become more contrite as oil income shrinks; Iran spent alot on crowd pleasing measures that did not manage to throw off the dead weight of sanctions. For now, only Russia seems able to have it both ways, pushing against the U.S. when oil was expensive, and now that it is cheap, cutting a deal with China that could change the game for everyone.

Russia Bombing Georgia - retreat to defend capital - BP oil pipelines closed
STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL ON THE SITUATION IN GEORGIA
New York, 9 August 2008
The Secretary-General is alarmed by the escalation of hostilities in Georgia which have resulted in large numbers of casualties and massive destruction in South Ossetia and other regions of Georgia. The Secretary-General is particularly concerned about violence spreading to areas outside the zone of the Georgian Ossetian conflict.
The Secretary-General is profoundly concerned over mounting tensions in the Abkhaz zone of conflict, including the bombing of the Upper Kodori Valley and the ongoing military build-up along the security zone. In the context of the announcement by the Abkhaz de facto authorities of a military operation in the Upper Kodori Valley which could be dangerously...

Oil Can Fall to $50-$60 if Credit Stays Tight
Reuters
Monday, Oct 13, 2008
World oil prices are likely to fall further if the rush to cash across global financial markets continues but crude is unlikely to dip for long below the oil industrys $50-a-barrel average operating cost, analysts said.
Benchmark U.S. crude has fallen 45 percent from Julys record $147.27 a barrel to trade at $81 a barrel Monday after settling at $77.70 on Friday, its lowest close in 13 months.
We believe the deepening banking sector crisis and the significant slowdown in global growth that lies ahead will continue to put downward pressure on commodity prices, said Deutsche Bank in a report released on Friday.
A combination of fear, de-stocking and disruptions across the supply chain owing to frozen credit...

FRONTLINE/WORLD | RUSSIA: Island on the Edge | PBS
A rough, new energy frontier
In this installment of FRONTLINE/World's Rough-Cut series, Nick Guroff explores the remote Sakhalin Island, what international oilmen might call a "hardship post." It is on the very edge of the Russian Far East, the historic equivalent of America's Wild West. The narrow, 600-mile-long island is populated by only half a million people, and its seasons are severe even by Russian standards.
But underneath the surface of the island and the surrounding seas is enough oil and gas to power the United States for as much as a decade.
