Emerging Energo-Fascism, Part 2

Posted by Matt in January 18th, 2007

Michael T. Klare is a professor of peace and world security studies at Hampshire College and the author of Blood and Oil: The Dangers and Consequences of America’s Growing Dependence on Imported Petroleum (Owl Books). This is the second of a two-part series; the first part can be found here. This piece originally appeared at TomDispatch.

Not “Islamo-fascism” but “Energo-fascism”—the heavily militarized global struggle over diminishing supplies of energy—will dominate world affairs (and darken the lives of ordinary citizens) in the decades to come. This is so because top government officials globally are increasingly unwilling to rely on market forces to satisfy national energy needs and are instead assuming direct responsibility for the procurement, delivery, and allocation of energy supplies. The leaders of the major powers are ever more prepared to use force when deemed necessary to overcome any resistance to their energy priorities. In the case of the United States, this has required the conversion of our armed forces into a global oil-protection service; two other significant expressions of emerging Energo-fascism are: the arrival of Russia as an “energy superpower” and the repressive implications of plans to rely on nuclear power.

Solar Energy For Transportation Fuel
May 12, 2008 Berkeley Lab lecture: Nate Lewis' talk looks at the challenge of capturing solar energy and storing it as an affordable transportation fuel — all on a scale necessary to reduce global warming. Overcoming this challenge will require developing new materials that can use abundant and inexpensive elements rather than costly and rare materials. He discusses the promise of new materials in the development of carbon-free alternatives to fossil fuel.

Relativistic medium from unified energy vector
Friendly challenge to string/M-theorists: Kaku, Greene, Randall, Hawking, et al...recall the Feynman lectures...and provide evidence of what your string-membrane-spaceball entity is made of, by improving on the answer: "It's turtles all the way down!" For alternative, welcome to video introduction for a paper I wrote in Maple 10, Relativistic medium from unified energy vector: http://www.maplesoft.com/applications/app_center_view.aspx?AID=1981 EXTENDED ABSTRACT: Since every valid physical entity must, on some basis, have a gravitoelectromagnetic flux distribution in all 3D in its own inertial frame...the quantum must therefore have, in addition to the familiar 2D transverse flux plane, a 3rd spatial distribution along its longitudinal axis of travel in its own inertial frame. In view...

Energy Crossroads: A burning need to change course
As our global population and its appetite for energy rise drastically, resource depletion and global climate change have become the most pressing issues facing humanity today. Scientists and experts agree that the use of renewable energy, coupled with higher efficiency and conservation, will be key factors in preserving our quality of life and paving the way to a sustainable world for our children. Will America be up to the task as it consumes 25% of the world's energy, 85% of which comes from non-renewable fossil fuels? Using the powerful persuasive medium of film, the documentary is a great tool for concerned citizen, educators, teachers, and advocating groups to help bring this urgent message across to the general public.

Supernova Rap
Life and Death in a Binary Star System. Written by high school students for the 2008 BCCP Cosmology Workshop. Imagine 6 days of learning about the entire history of the universe, from its inception 13.7 billion years ago, to the stages of cosmic evolution; matter and antimatter; the electromagnetic spectrum; dark matter and dark energy; General and Special Relativity; neutrino astrophysics; and nuclear radioactive decay. Then you have to sort through this dense volume of information and write a script about one of these concepts in 2 days. No rehearsal. No pre-production. One hour to shoot the video on the last day of the workshop. http://bccp.lbl.gov/Academy/workshop2.html BCCP homepage: http://bccp.lbl.gov/
