Solar Energy For Transportation Fuel
May 12, 2008 Berkeley Lab lecture: Nate Lewis' talk looks at the challenge of capturing solar energy and storing it as an affordable transportation fuel — all on a scale necessary to reduce global warming. Overcoming this challenge will require developing new materials that can use abundant and inexpensive elements rather than costly and rare materials. He discusses the promise of new materials in the development of carbon-free alternatives to fossil fuel.

Introduction to EcoCAR
Rising fuel prices, combined with a national obsession for going green are creating fundamental changes in what people expect from their cars. The issues of energy efficiency, global climate change and cleaner air pose challenges across the globe.
To address these concerns the United States Department of Energy, General Motors and Natural Resources: Canada have developed a three-year collegiate advanced vehicle technology engineering competition to demonstrate and extend the progress toward a common goal: sustainable mobility.
The competition challenges 17 universities across North America to explore vehicle solutions to minimize energy consumption and reduce emissions. Students use a real-world engineering process, modeled after GM's Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP) and...

Expanding Universe
Alpha to Omega in 2+ minutes. Written by SF Bay Area high school students for the 2008 BCCP Cosmology Workshop.
Imagine 6 days of learning about the entire history of the universe, from its inception 13.7 billion years ago, to the stages of cosmic evolution; matter and antimatter; the electromagnetic spectrum; dark matter and dark energy; General and Special Relativity; neutrino astrophysics; and nuclear radioactive decay.
Then you have to sort through this dense volume of information and write a script about one of these concepts in 2 days. No rehearsal. No pre-production. One hour to shoot the video on the last day of the workshop.

Dark Energy Stifling Structure Growth
For the first time, astronomers have clearly seen the effects of "dark energy" on the most massive collapsed objects in the universe using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. By tracking how dark energy has stifled the growth of galaxy clusters and combining this with previous studies, scientists have obtained the best clues yet about what dark energy is and what the destiny of the universe could be.
This work, which took years to complete, is separate from other methods of dark energy research such as supernovas. These new X-ray results provide a crucial independent test of dark energy, long sought by scientists, which depends on how gravity competes with accelerated expansion in the growth of cosmic structures. Techniques based on distance measurements, such as supernova work, do not...

GM Energy Diversity - Kelley Blue Book Interviews Larry Burns
http://www.kbb.com
The Chevrolet Volt is the first vehicle of GM's second century. That's how GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner presented it, anyway, at a 100th birthday celebration the automaker was throwing for itself. The highly anticipated unveiling of the production Volt revealed a car that's not styled as aggressively as the concept version, but one the company says lives up to the original promise of delivering 40 miles of range on electricity alone. Describing it as an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or E-REV, the Volt features 220 lithium-ion cells that can be fully charged in eight hours with a standard 120-volt outlet or three hours using a 240-volt outlet, at a cost of about 80 cents, according to GM. When the battery's energy is depleted, a gasoline-powered generator...
