Russia Profile Experts Panel: Friendless in Moscow: Does Russia Need Allies?

Posted by Matt in January 22nd, 2007

Moscow’s latest spat with Minsk over oil and gas prices effectively ended the pretense of forming the Union State between Russia and Belarus as well as making it obvious that regardless of its energy superpower status, Russia has no reliable allies and is forced to act as a lone ranger on the international scene.

The gas price issue, which is fundamentally about Moscow’s effort to end the distorted and ineffective energy subsidies to the former Soviet states, has poisoned Russia’s relationship with its neighbors. Even before the row with Belarus, Moscow managed to strain what promised to be an amicable and even allied relationship with Azerbaijan under President Ilham Aliyev because of Gazprom’s insistence on charging higher gas prices. Ukraine and Moldova remain unreliable partners that haggle with Moscow over everything. Armenia is the closest thing Russia has to an ally, but it, too, is swallowing the gas price hikes with difficulty. Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev is resisting Russia’s attempts to move towards a closer relationship and is pursuing his own geopolitical game, maneuvering between Russia, China and the West. The rest of Central Asia is a mess, presenting Russia with serious foreign policy challenges and not helping Moscow advance its agenda.

Russian War Criminal, General Baranov, Hero of Russia
July 27th 2006 the European Court will give the verdict in case Bazorkina vs Russia. Bazorkina's son "disappeared" in the hands of Russian soldiers. The interestring thing is that CNN got on film sequence, where general Baranov gave order to kill the wounded soldier, Bazorkina's son. Baranov later was appointed "Hero of Russia" and is now the highest commander of all Russian troups in North Caucasus. This film shows that Baranov is a war criminal, a simple killer. His promotion and high rank in the Russian army shows a dark side of Putin's Russia.

General Introduction to Huliganov's YouTube Russian Course
This is the introduction to the whole Russia course, which I didn't do at the start as I never knew it would take off as it has done. I've added annotations to get people started to various start points in the course and the goldlist system, and to enlarge on the points raised. The Facebook group by Lafeen Maggio has the URL: http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6549175221 The google group has the URL http://groups.google.com/group/huliganov?pli=1 http://astore.amazon.com/wwwusenetposc-20 is the Amazon affiliates store containing my recommendations. If you buy there, it may not be the cheapest for you, I don't need the 4% I get, but I will use it for competition prizes in the channel. You can see what is available there, and then buy it somewhere cheaper if you like. If I ever...

Russia Sends Navy Fleet To Venezuela Cuba!!
Russia warns NATO To leave the Black sea In 21 days or be attacked. MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday Russia will respond calmly to the presence of NATO warships in the Black Sea. (Russia's Black Sea Fleet - Image gallery) "Our response will be calm, not hysterical, but there will definitely be a response," Putin said. NATO sent a number of ships, including U.S. warships, into the Black Sea after Russia completed its operation "to force Georgia to peace" on August 12. The operation came as a response to Georgia's attack on South Ossetia on August 8. The U.S. has delivered millions of dollars of what it says is humanitarian aid to its ally Georgia. Russia has however questioned the nature of the deliveries. "If the talk is about...

Ivan Canas: Russia warns NATO over build-up of warships in Black Sea. This video shows the arrival of two of them amongst protest in Turkey
Russia's military says it is bewildered by the build-up of NATO's naval force in the Black Sea -- and scoffed at claims the warships were delivering humanitarian aid. Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff, Colonel General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, told a media briefing that there are currently ten NATO warships with cruise missiles in the area, and eight more are expected to arrive there shortly. "These ships are very seriously armed," Nogovitsyn said. "As far as cruise missiles are concerned, they are strategic arms and have a range of 2,500 km. The Black Sea is just a pool for them." The Colonel General added it's very hard to believe these ships have arrived just to bring humanitarian aid. He said the build-up was connected with Georgia's wish to restore its military potential and...

Russia threatened by US Missile Shield in Europe
US signed missile defense shield in former CCCP satellite province. Our Russian General Yuri Baluyevsky said, "We have no plans to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the world community to clearly understand ... that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, military forces will be used, including preventively, including with the use of nuclear weapons." Our Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says Russia's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile was direct response to the planned U.S. missile defense shield and this will change the strategic balance in Europe. My response to this... My Russia is the largest nuclear power. NATO/US must realize otherwise direct attack of RUSSIAN FORCES is incoming. Russia is...

Riz Khan - Nato secretary-general - 25 Sep 08 - Part 1
Riz speaks to the Nato secretary-general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, on the Russia-Georgia conflict, the ongoing violence in Afghanistan as well as the way forward for a more efficient and effective Nato. There has been a war of the words at the United Nations General Assembly after Ukraine rejected Russian pressure to prevent their entry into Nato on Wednesday, September 24, 200. Without specifically naming Russia, Viktor Yushchenko, the Ukrainian president, condemned "all acts of aggression and the use of force that occurred in the region." Russia is opposed to Nato entry for both Georgia and Ukraine, saying that NATO expansion and its support of a planned US anti-missile system in the Czech Republic and Poland is a "strategic error."
