Iran tests missiles as tensions rise

Posted by Matt in January 23rd, 2007

The move suggests no letup in the dispute with the West. One missile could hit U.S. bases in the gulf.

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran conducted missile tests yesterday as its leadership stepped up warnings of a possible military confrontation with the United States.

The drum-beating suggested Iran does not intend to back down in its standoff with the West. It also could be an effort to rally the public behind the government and silence increasingly bold criticism at home of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s antagonism toward the United States.

Iran’s leaders have touted the possibility of a U.S. attack since President Bush announced on Jan. 9 the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the gulf region, a move U.S. officials have said is a show of strength directed at Iran.

Iranian Missiles Capable of Hitting Israel and US Bases
Nine long and medium-range missiles have been tested by Iran, including one which it has previously said could travel as far as Israel and U.S. bases in the region. The tests occurred at a time of increased tension between Iran and Israel over Tehran's disputed nuclear programme, which the West fears is aimed at making bombs. Iran says its nuclear programme is only for power generation. State Press TV said the missiles tested by Iran's Revolutionary Guards included the 'Shahab 3' missile, which officials have said could reach targets 2,000 km (1,250 miles) away. In response, a U.S. White House spokesman said Iran should "refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world".

New leap in Iran's missile technology
Iran successfully tested the missile recently, which burns a combination of solid and liquid fuels and has a range of 2,000 kilometers. "This is a whole new missile," Uzi Rubin, former director of Israel's Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, told Jane's military intelligence website. "Unlike other Iranian missiles, Sajjil bears no resemblance to any North Korean, Russian, Chinese or Pakistani [missile technology]. It demonstrates a significant leap in Iran's missile capabilities, he added. "Regardless of the success of the test, this missile places Iran in the realm of multiple-stage missiles, which means that they are on the way to having intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities," Rubin noted. Iran has said that its missile capability is of a defensive nature.

Iran's Photoshopped Missiles Are "Glorified Scuds"
http://www.infowars.net/index.html Ridiculous merry-go-round over fake photos and the real facts behind Iran's non existent weapons program Steve Watson Infowars.net Friday, July 11, 2008 http://www.infowars.net/articles/july2008/110708Scuds.htm The events of the last two days surrounding the Iranian missile tests once again highlight that the perception of any threat Iran poses to the U.S. and even to Israel is wholly manufactured and has been blown out of all proportion by the Western media and, by proxy, the two presidential candidates. Several defense analysts reiterated yesterday that the missile test, far from being a show of strength on the part of the Iranians was another reminder of their supreme lack of fire power. Mark Fitzpatrick of the London-based International...

Iran Test-Fired 9 Missiles
Tension arose anew in the gulf on Wednesday, July 9 when Iran test-fired nine missiles that are capable of hitting Israel, making a dramatic show of its readiness to strike back if the United States or Israel attacks it over its nuclear program. The timing and location of the tests were clearly aimed to send a message, that Tel Aviv would be "set on fire" if Iran is attacked. Months ago, a Cargo ship hired by the US military reportedly fired warning shots at suspected armed Iranian boats in April 25th Friday, as the Pentagon sharpened its warnings to Tehran. Westward Venture cargo ship chartered by the US Defense Department was traveling in international waters when two unidentified small boats approached them. The boats did not respond to radio queries and a warning flare, the cargo...

I doubt Iran would be so aggressive if we were not bogged down in Iraq. We don’t have enough troops to do anything more than bomb Iran a few times and I doubt we’ll do that. The Israelis will probably take care of that. Who could blame them. A neighboring country with a “president” who repeatedly says Israel should be wiped off of the face earth would seem to justify a pre-emptive strike to take out Iran’s nuclear capability.
