Iran tests missiles as tensions rise

Posted by Matt in January 23rd, 2007

The move suggests no letup in the dispute with the West. One missile could hit U.S. bases in the gulf.

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran conducted missile tests yesterday as its leadership stepped up warnings of a possible military confrontation with the United States.

The drum-beating suggested Iran does not intend to back down in its standoff with the West. It also could be an effort to rally the public behind the government and silence increasingly bold criticism at home of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s antagonism toward the United States.

Iran’s leaders have touted the possibility of a U.S. attack since President Bush announced on Jan. 9 the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the gulf region, a move U.S. officials have said is a show of strength directed at Iran.

New leap in Iran's missile technology
Iran successfully tested the missile recently, which burns a combination of solid and liquid fuels and has a range of 2,000 kilometers. "This is a whole new missile," Uzi Rubin, former director of Israel's Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, told Jane's military intelligence website. "Unlike other Iranian missiles, Sajjil bears no resemblance to any North Korean, Russian, Chinese or Pakistani [missile technology]. It demonstrates a significant leap in Iran's missile capabilities, he added. "Regardless of the success of the test, this missile places Iran in the realm of multiple-stage missiles, which means that they are on the way to having intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities," Rubin noted. Iran has said that its missile capability is of a defensive nature.

Iranian Shahab 3B Missile test fire
The Iranian Shahab-3 [alternatively designated Zelzal (Earthquake)] missile is said to be a derivative of the 1,000-1,300 kilometer range North Korean Nodong-1. The Nodong missile was developed by North Korea with Iranian financial assistance. Around one year ago Iran claimed for the first time to have developed and produced a laser gyroscope INS system coupled with GPS as backup. With that guidance system, the Shahab-3B could archive an accuracy of around 30-50m CEP or even less. This new improved accuracy was apparently the reason why the warhead weight has been significantly decreased - to suggested 500kg. This, namely, is sufficient for pin-point target attack capability. Another reason for the 500kg warhead would be the improved range, which is reported to be meanwhile between 1.700...

Middle East Update - Iran Test Fires Missiles (rockets) BibleOrTraditions
(RTTNews, July 8, 2008) - Iran has threatened to attack Israel and the U.S. navy in the Gulf as its first response to any attack on its nuclear sites, media reports quoting a senior aide to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tuesday. "The first U.S. shot on Iran would set the United States' vital interests in the world on fire," said Ali Shirazi, who is Khamenei's representative to the naval forces of the elite Revolutionary Guards. He said that Tel Aviv and the U.S. fleet in the Persian Gulf would be the targets that would be set on fire in Iran's crushing response. (World Tribune, June 22, 2007) Iran has expanded its naval presence in the Straits of Hormuz, the passage for an estimated 40 percent of global crude oil shipments. The U.S. Navy has determined that Iran has...

I doubt Iran would be so aggressive if we were not bogged down in Iraq. We don’t have enough troops to do anything more than bomb Iran a few times and I doubt we’ll do that. The Israelis will probably take care of that. Who could blame them. A neighboring country with a “president” who repeatedly says Israel should be wiped off of the face earth would seem to justify a pre-emptive strike to take out Iran’s nuclear capability.
