A new arms race in space?

Posted by Matt in January 25th, 2007

IF THERE is to be a new arms race in space, China will be in it. Its belated admission that earlier this month it destroyed one of its own satellites—blowing it to smithereens by slamming a ballistic missile into it over 500 miles (800km) up in space—is China’s way of saying that it will cede control of space to no one. The feat itself was not particularly impressive: both the United States and the then Soviet Union carried out similar space tests more than 20 years ago. But shooting down its own satellite shows that China could now blast someone else’s out of the sky, too (see article). Putting its marker in the heavens in this way reflects badly on China as a terrestrial power. Yet its poor space etiquette could be turned to advantage.

Space Race With China?
Before China carried out an anti-satellite test in January 2007, some U.S. policy-makers, including NASA Administrator Michael Griffin and the U.S. House China Working Group, advocated greater cooperation between the United States and China in space. After the test, which created a massive cloud of space debris that angered international space professionals and alarmed the American public, increased references to U.S.-China competition and hints of a new space race drowned out calls for cooperation. Using the experience they gained from visiting China several times in the last eight months, analysts Jeffrey Lewis and Gregory Kulacki will evaluate the costs and benefits of cooperation and competition between the United States and China in light of the history of Chinese interest in ASAT...

(01) Why We Fight: "Battle of China (ca. 1944) 1/5
SUBSCRIBE TO EXCELLENT WORLD WAR II ERA VIDEOS The Battle of China(1944) was the sixth film of Frank Capra's Why We Fight propaganda film series. It describes the modern history of China, with the founding of the Republic of China by Sun Yat-sen, and leads on to the Japanese invasion. The invasion of China is explained in terms of the four-step plan for Japanese conquest, mentioned in the Tanaka Memorial. "Here was their mad dream. Phase One - the occupation of Manchuria for raw materials. Phase Two - the absorption of China for manpower. Phase Three - a triumphant sweep to the south to seize the riches of the Indies. Phase Four - the eastward move to crush the United States.". Special attention is paid to Japanese atrocities such as the bombing of Shanghai and the Nanking Massacre -- the...

Overseas Chinese, why are they Pro-China?
Finally the Western Media realized that this Pro-China sentiment among overseas Chinese is not fanned by the Chinese Government yet CNN failed to understand why. The answer is by racism the West lost the heart and mind of the Chinese Community. Those Chinese Americans, especially the 2nd generation and after, were reminded over and over again by the yellow star on their face. Even though they thought they were Americans they are still treated as foreigners, especially when the conflicts between China and America occurred.
