Elite ponder threats to globalization

Posted by Matt in January 25th, 2007

DAVOS, Switzerland - The high-profile Davos meeting of the international political, business, economic and academic elite began on Wednesday on the somber note that globalization is facing major threats due to worsening climate change, growing income disparities, escalating barriers to the movement of people, and global political and economic instability.

“We are living in a schizophrenic world,” Klaus Schwab, founder and chief executive of the World Economic Forum, said at a press
conference, arguing that “there are so many underlying imbalances, fragilities, and inconsistencies” that need to be addressed on a war footing if the world is to be made a safe place. He said there are 23 risks that are posing a major challenge to globalization, especially climate change and the stalemate in global trade negotiations. The situation in the Middle East is another major problem that needs to be addressed on a firm footing, he suggested, indicating that Davos is the best platform that can set the stage for arriving at appropriate answers on these global risks.

The central theme of this year’s meeting is “shifting power equations”, which aims to grapple with ongoing changes in the world.

Post-Tsunami Aid: What Is Human Life Worth? The catastrophe in South Asia has generated a large number of initiatives designed to support the region. Individuals and governments worldwide have committed billions of dollars to assist affected areas. The tsunami disaster now runs the risk of overshadowing other areas of the world where populations remain in need of food and assistance, and raises a number of ethical questions. 1) What is fair and sustainable reconstruction? 2) What role should civil society, governments and economic actors play in this context? 3) How can support for the "forgotten" people be ensured? Is the WTO's Tenth Birthday Worth Celebrating? When the World Trade Organization came into being in 1995, it was hailed as a major step in a 50-year process of promoting trade and growth by setting predictable and uniform trade rules. Ten years later: 1) What has the WTO achieved and what have its biggest disappointments been? 2) What are the main challenges that need to be addressed in the years to come? 3) Is the World Trade Organization equipped to fulfil its mission of trade liberalization and regulation in the context of its growing number of member states and an increasingly integrated global economy? Davos Open Forum 2005 - A Revolution for Children?
Must We Call a Revolution for Children? Globalization now means a drive towards "flexibility" and an ever cheaper workforce. Extreme forms of exploitation are being pushed down the supply chain and concentrated in the developing economies. Child trafficking and labour exploitation are consequences as children cannot defend themselves. In absolute terms, far more children are being exploited than ever before. 1) Are our societies unconsciously promoting modern forms of slavery and the exploitation of children? 2) Are efforts by governments and companies to stop exploitation simply a window-dressing exercise to protect reputations? 3) Why are the losers in the process of globalization simply ignored?
