Russia - The New Energy Frontier
May 2006
The island of Sakhalin, home to Russia's first ever liquid gas plant, has become the world's newest energy frontier. But residents claim their own needs are being ignored.
When completed, the Sakhalin Energy plant will be one of the biggest integrated oil and gas projects in the world. But locals expect to see none of the benefits. "All the money will go to foreigners and to Moscow. We'll only lose out", complains one resident. They were initially promised 40% of the profits but now this money will go directly to Moscow. People have had to abandon their homes without compensation and there are claims the pipelines have already polluted the environment. Residents won't even have access to the gas produced. As one local complains: "Our needs aren't being considered."

Bill O'Reilly Interviews Obama: Energy and Russia. Part 4
I'm not sure if Bill O'Reilly would make a good Secretary of State, even though the qualifications for getting that position have not been set very high over the last 16 years.
I am very much not an Obama supporter, but I must point out something that Obama said that I think is key to the survival of our country as we know it. In regards to Russia and what we need to do in response to their potential threat to us he said; "...the second thing...is actually defensive, we've got to get our energy policy straight". This is the most important issue that America faces, and that was all we heard about it?
Just spend a few minutes thinking about it and you will come to the same conclusion that this is the one issue that is connected to, and over rides all other issues.
Think of our country...

Energy War (IJsbrand van Veelen, VPRO 2006)
Forget the axis of evil, its the axis of oil
The Cold War and the War on Terror were about ideology and globalization. The 21st century will be dominated by the struggle for energy: It will be every man for himself and it's going to get dirty.
In the two-part documentary Energy War, VPRO's Backlight investigates the major developments with regards to energy sources. Featuring NY Times columnist Thomas Friedman.
The film describes the geopolitical consequences of the dependency on fossil fuels. In the struggle for the last sources of fossil fuels, countries all over the world are forced to take new political and moral decisions and have to enter into awkward alliances: rogue regimes must be tolerated and befriended. With a special focus on the gas conflict between Georgia and Russia and...
