Coming suicide epidemic in China as population collapses

Posted by Matt in January 27th, 2007

There is almost no chance that China will become the world’s hegemonic superpower, or that the Chinese yuan will dislodge the US dollar as the key reserve currency in our life-times. It is ageing faster than any nation in history. Indeed, there is a risk that China’s demographic structure will implode long before the great mass of China’s interior ever become rich. This was more or less the conclusion of a closed-door session of Chinese experts at the Davos gathering, regrettably on “Chatham House” rules so none can be named.

Dangerous Demographics
Over the next few decades, the developed world will age and weaken. Meanwhile, demographic trends in the developing world-from resurgent youth booms in the Islamic Belt to premature aging in China and population implosion in Russia-will give rise to daunting new security threats. While some argue that "global aging" is pushing the world toward greater peace and prosperity, a crisis looms in the 2020s. The risks of both chaotic state collapse and neo-authoritarian reaction are rising. Neither the triumph of democratic capitalism nor a "geriatric peace" are the most likely outcomes. The demographic trends of the 21st century will challenge the geopolitical idealism of both the right and the left. In a wide-ranging analysis of the dynamics of population and power, Richard Jackson and Neil...

March Past - Independence Day of China [50th Anniversary]
Independence Day or National Days are perhaps the most important day for a nation to honor as a national holiday. For many nations the date of Independence Day may be of a battle fought to gain freedom or the birth of a national hero who helped the country in its struggle for independence. The Chinese celebrate their Independence Day on the 1st of October every year, marking the foundation of the People's Republic of China. The Central People's Government passed the Resolution on the National Day of the People's Republic of China on December 2, 1949 and declared October 1 as the National Day or Independence Day of China. China, a cultural state and ancient civilization in East Asia, is one of the world's oldest leading civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than...

Dr. John Tanton Topic 9: Demographic Momentum
In September, 2006, Dr. John H. Tanton was interviewed by George A. Colburn. This topic includes a discussion of demographic momentum (also referred to as population momentum), where populations continue to grow even after replacement level fertility is reached. This is due to the younger topic of the population entering their childbearing years, so the population continues to grow for approximately a generation. Dr. Tanton discusses China's one-child policy and India's lack of such a policy - India has yet to make this demographic transition.

One Child Policy - China
August 2005 China's controversial one child policy has stemmed population growth but at what cost? From forced abortions to heavy fines, many have suffered. "If people tried to have a second child and didn't have any money, they'd have their house pulled down," complains Liu Shuling. She attracted the wrath of local officials and was heavily fined when she became pregnant a second time. "It was very hard," she recalls. "Fortunately, we didn't starve to death." For the past twenty-five years, controlling population growth has been a major priority for the Chinese government. "Unless there is a containment of population, there will be no economic growth, no social stability or social harmony," explains official Siri Tellier. But there's real concern that this policy has created a...

Eating Global Vancouver - Green Lettuce Restaurant
This film is the first in a series of short films created about "Eating Global Vancouver" by students taught by Prof. Henry Yu of the History Department at the University of British Columbia, with help from award-winning filmmaker Karin Lee, and initially shown at the Asian Library at UBC as part of Asian Heritage Month in May 2006. Using restaurants as the focus for exploring the complex interactions of Vancouver and its migrant populations, this series uses food to examine how we come together as a global city. Green Lettuce, a restaurant run by an ethnic Chinese family from India, serves Chinese food in Vancouver as Chinese restaurants would in Bombay or Calcutta, attracting a loyal following of Indian immigrant customers who find a unique reminder of home. This film series grew out of...

The Hypocrisy and Dangers of Anti-China Demonstrations
http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/04/14/8287/ We hear that Tibetans suffer "demographic aggression" and "cultural genocide". But we do not hear those terms applied to Spanish and French policies toward the Basque minority. We do not hear those terms applied to the US annexation of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1898. And Diego Garcia In 1973, not so long ago, the UK forcibly deported the entire native Chagossian population from the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia. ....

Burma Travel Doc Part 01
Burma, officially the Union of Myanmar is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia. The country is bordered by the People's Republic of China on the northeast, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, India on the northwest, the Bay of Bengal to the southwest with the Gulf of Martaban and Andaman Sea defining its southern periphery. One-third of Burma's total perimeter, 1,930 kilometers (1,199 mi), forms an uninterrupted coastline. Burma's diverse population has played a major role in defining its politics, history and demographics in modern times, and the country continues to struggle to mend its ethnic tensions. Its political system remains under the tight control of the SPDC, the military-led government, led since 1992 by Senior...
