Americas Next Foreign Policy Playbook
As President-elect Barack Obama prepares to enter office on Jan. 20, much of his focus has been directed toward the many national security and foreign policy issues that await him in the Oval Office. The list spans the globe, but has a heavy concentration in the volatile Middle East.
At this Dec. 16 New America event, held at the Core Club in New York City, foreign policy experts and New America Foundation Board members Fareed Zakaria and Anne-Marie Slaughter explored the ways in which they think the Obama administration will differ from the Bush presidency. Slaughter, dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, and Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, offered their expertise on Iraq; Afghanistan; Iran; Pakistan and India; Israel...

Ten Foreign Policy Questions for the Next President (3 of 8)
June 25, 2008 - Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA's Bin Laden Unit and author of three New York Times bestselling books, talks about the ten foreign policy questions that John McCain and Barack Obama must answer.
In this video, Scheuer asks:
6) Why is Washington supporting the Russian and Chinese campaigns to annihilate parts of their Muslim populations?
7) Why has the U.S. government failed, since 1991, to secure the former Soviet Union's nuclear arsenal, leaving a chance for an islamist nuclear attack in America?
8) With talk about war with Iran again in the air, why has no binding Senate resolution been passed to forbit this president -- and all future presidents -- from starting premeditated offensive conflicts without the formal declaration of war by Congress that the...

Mr. Chomsky on the history of the United Nations

Rep. Ron Paul (Russia-Georgia Conflict, U.S. economy)
The Ron Paul FREEDOM PRINCIPLES
* Rights belong to individuals, not groups.
* Property should be owned by people, not government.
* All voluntary associations should be permissible -- economic and social.
* The government's monetary role is to maintain the integrity of the monetary unit, not participate in fraud.
* Government exists to protect liberty, not to redistribute wealth or to grant special privileges.
* The lives and actions of people are their own responsibility, not the government's.

Briefing 2.0: U.S. National Interests
This video is a question for the third State Departments Briefing 2.0 on 12/10/2008; I may be too late in posting this but hopefully not.
I am a big fan of this project as it creates an enhanced and bidirectional channel for the sharing of information and offers the potential for growth in public understanding of foreign policy issues. Further, I think that it offers a model for one tool toward political reform in the Middle East based upon the Arab tradition of the Majlis.
Of course, I know the answers to these questions, but I think that it is important that the State Department be public, explicit, and detailed on this issue. If an answer is given, but is inadequate, I may provide the correct answer for the benefit of my subscribers.
Before anyone asks in comments: Yes, that is...

Democracy's Triumph: Advantages and Drawbacks
Michael Mandelbaum, Christian A. Herter Professor of American Foreign Policy, The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies
In 1900, only ten countries could be counted as democracies. By 1975 there were thirty. Today, 119 of the world's 190 countries have adopted democracy, and it is by far the most celebrated and prestigious form of government. In Democracy's Good Name, Michael Mandelbaum, one of America's leading foreign policy thinkers, explores the reasons for democracy's extraordinary surge in the twentieth century. Mandelbaum delves into many pressing questions: How did democracy acquire its good name? Why do important countries remain undemocratic? What accounts for the fact that the introduction of one of democracy's defining features -- free elections --...
