South Korean Parliament Free Trade Brawl
CHAN:
A sledgehammer battle took place at the South Korean Parliament today, literally. Parliament members opposing a a closed door meeting broke into a conference with sledgehammers and crowbars. One person suffered a head injury while others scuffled. Doors were knocked off their hinges while a desk used as a barricade was reduced to splinters.
STORY:
Members of South Korea's Grand National Party had barricaded themselves in the foreign affairs committee office, propping furniture against the door to keep Democratic Party members out. They wanted to finally approve legislation to a free trade deal with the United States.
But Democratic Party members opposing the deal broke their way in.

South Korea jails Indian mariners, Japans whalers chased by a garbage scow
In December, 2007, a Hong Kong oil tanker named Hebei Spirit went to unload its cargo in the South Korean port of Daesan on the Yellow Sea coast of Taean County, South Korea. The port officials (harbor master) requested the oil tanker wait outside the harbor, drop anchor until receiving further instructions. While oil tanker was waiting and follow the harbor masters orders, two tug boats nearby were hauling a crane barge owned by the South Korean corporation Samsung Heavy Industries. The barge broke loose and collided with the oil tanker, puncturing the tanker in three places causing an oil spill of some 10,800 tones of oil. The spill occurred near Mallipo Beach, considered on of South Koreas most popular beaches. To their credit some 20,000 South Korean volunteers help clean up this...
