Analysis: Iran and China team up for gas

Posted by Matt in February 6th, 2007

CAIRO — Amid ever-increasing US-Iran tensions, a recent $3.6 billion gas deal between China and Iran not only reflects Beijing’s need for energy and Tehran’s need to develop its gas sector, but also a desire by both countries to shrug off American pressure.

The recent deal for the China National Petroleum Corporation, to develop part of the Iranian offshore South Pars gas field, is not the first between the two countries, but it comes at a time when the US is becoming increasingly aggressive with Iran, and soon after Beijing publicly requested that Washington not interfere in its dealings with Tehran.

A $16 billion agreement in December for Chinese development of the 48 trillion cubic foot North Pars gas field immediately attracted US criticism.

Winds of Change - China
Sep 2007 As world leaders meet for another round of global warming talks, the focus is likely to be on big polluters like China. The country has recently become the world's biggest CO2 emitter. Currently, 80% of China's energy comes from coal. Mindful of the pollution these power stations generate, the government is investing billions in renewable energy. "China is probably going to be the world's number one renewable energy country", predicts businessman Mark Kelleher. By 2020, 16% of the country's energy must come from renewable sources. Much of this will be generated by wind farms. "This area has really developed since the wind power station was built", enthuses one local. "When the wind power station came, people got jobs".

Qigong - China
July 1995 Qigong is the art of harnessing the force that is said to give nature its pattern. Millions of Chinese get out of bed for it every morning. A qualified physiotherapist uses it to treat her patients. People break bricks in half with it. And it's more dedicated followers believe that it can help beat cancer. Followers believe that Qigong energy can be transferred from one person to another. They say that mice infused with Qigong energy can swim longer than mice without it. In China mass healings are carried out using the energy. There is no doubt Qigong keeps its followers fit and healthy. And although there is scepticism about its more tenuous abilities, for millions of Chinese, Qigong works.

Global Warming & The Future of Coal - Making Clean Energy
Ever-rising industrial and consumer demand for more power in tandem with cheap and abundant coal reserves across the globe are expected to result in the construction of new coal-fired power plants producing 1,400 gigawatts of electricity by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency. In the absence of emission controls, these new plants will increase worldwide annual emissions of carbon dioxide by approximately 7.6 billion metric tons by 2030. These emissions would equal roughly 50 percent of all fossil fuel emissions over the past 250 years. Methane Plants: China's Clean Energy Alternative
China is the world's largest producer of coal and its largest consumer. The country relies on coal for 70 percent of its energy use. And China's appetite for energy is ravenous. The country is expected to build as many as 500 new coal-fired power plants over the next decade. But coal is the dirtiest of fossil fuels. It is responsible for the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions in China. So the country is trying to modernize its coal-fired power plants to make them cleaner and more efficient, reducing emissions. One way is to use captured methane gas, a natural byproduct of coal mining. Huang Shengchu, an engineer, adopted the idea a decade ago. It gave rise to the country's biggest methane power plant — and one of its best tools in its fight against climate change. Original...
