25 million migrants to come to Russia

Posted by Matt in February 9th, 2007

Within the next 20 years Russia will require about 25mn labor migrants, otherwise, due to impetuous shortening of employable population, the country may face the prospect of economic stagnation and the pension system will be destroyed. This is the summary of the survey called Economical and political situation in Russia in January of 2006, conducted by the Institute for the Economy in Transition.

The population of the country has impetuously been reducing during the last 15 years and nobody ever wondered. However, the labor force felt the changes most recently and the next few years are unlikely to see the situation improved: Russian working class is due to encounter scarcity of labor. This year working population of the country is probably to reduce by 300 thousand people, but in the following years their number will gradually increase, up to 1 million people annually in 2010-2018. Consequently, by 2026 labor force of the country will reduce by 17-18mn people. It should be taken into account that the current number of working people in Russia makes up 67mn, therefore, in some years the country is expected to lose quarter of all labor. Experts believe that only migrants from neighbouring countries can fill up the growing “gap”.

Dangerous Demographics
Over the next few decades, the developed world will age and weaken. Meanwhile, demographic trends in the developing world-from resurgent youth booms in the Islamic Belt to premature aging in China and population implosion in Russia-will give rise to daunting new security threats. While some argue that "global aging" is pushing the world toward greater peace and prosperity, a crisis looms in the 2020s. The risks of both chaotic state collapse and neo-authoritarian reaction are rising. Neither the triumph of democratic capitalism nor a "geriatric peace" are the most likely outcomes. The demographic trends of the 21st century will challenge the geopolitical idealism of both the right and the left. In a wide-ranging analysis of the dynamics of population and power, Richard Jackson and Neil...

The past twelve months have seen some significant developments in nearly every sphere of Russian life, from politics and economics to sport and culture. It was a year that Russia lost some of its most famous figures, including Boris Yeltsin and Mstislav Rostropovich. But it also brought the country a new government, a demographic rise, and the right to host the 2014 winter Olympics.

Blood and Oil - Middle East in WWI Pt 1: Surprise Attack
Part 1 - Surprise Attack. Enver Pasha, minister of war for the Ottoman Empire, agrees to a secret alliance with Germany in August 1914. Istanbul mobilizes its army but remains neutral for nearly three months. Eager for a fight against Russia, Enver orders the Turkish Black Sea Fleet to bombard Russian seaports on October 29th. The Triple Entente -- France, Russia and Great Britain -- reacts swiftly and declares war against the Turks within a week. Except for the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaigns, the extensive combat operations in the Middle East during World War I have been largely overlooked in documentary programs. Given the historical significance of the Ottoman Empire's demise in 1918, and the ongoing importance of Middle Eastern oil reserves to Western economies, a close study of...

В.Путин.Вступительное слово.17.03.05
Introductory Remarks at Security Council Meeting on Immigration Policy March 17, 2005 The Kremlin, Moscow Вступительное слово на заседании Совета Безопасности по миграционной политике 17 марта 2005 года Москва, Кремль PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN: Good afternoon, dear colleagues. Today we are to examine the issue of immigration policy. An effectively implemented immigration policy is of critical importance for our country. This is why the Security Council is examining this subject. I just want to remind you that the last time we analysed this matter was in October 2001. Since that time, a whole series of concrete measures, both legislative and administrative, have been taken in this area....

Blood and Oil - Middle East in WWI Pt 2: Military Disaster
Part 2 - Military Disaster. Enver Pasha takes personal command of the Ottoman Third Army (95,000 men) and sends it to attack Russian forces in the Caucasus. German military advisor, General Liman von Sanders, advises against a mountain offensive in winter. On December 29, 1914, the Ottoman advance is halted by about 100,000 Russian troops at Sarikamesh. Six days later, the Turks have lost 30,000 men and reel back toward the city of Erzurum. More soldiers desert or die of frostbite; more than half of the Third Army is lost. Except for the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaigns, the extensive combat operations in the Middle East during World War I have been largely overlooked in documentary programs. 7 Annual Big Press Conference Part 1 February 14,2008 President of Russia V.Putin The Kremlin,Moscow RESIDENT OF RUSSIA VLADIMIR PUTIN: Good afternoon, friends and colleagues, It is my pleasure to welcome you to this event that has now become a tradition. I would like to begin as usual by summing up the results for 2007. I will have to give a few figures. I will be brief, but I will repeat some of the figures I have already quoted, and I am happy to do so because 2007 was a successful year. It is enough to say that, as you already know now, our economy grew by 8.1 percent, and this is one of our best results over these last years. Calculated on a purchasing parity basis, our economy has grown to a size that now puts us ahead of G8 countries such as Italy and France. Russias economy is...

7 Annual Big Press Conference Part 18 February 14,2008 President of Russia V.Putin The Kremlin,Moscow VLADIMIR PUTIN: On the surface the price freeze does look like an anti-market decision. But I am not so sure that this is actually the case. Rising food prices are a result not just of rising prices on the world markets. People say that the Chinese are now consuming greater quantities of foodstuffs and that consumption has also increased in India, that oil prices have gone up and therefore prices for everything else also rise accordingly. These are objective circumstances, and Russia is a part of the global economy. But there are also other circumstances, things such as customs regulations, monopoly deals, relations between the different economic sectors, between the fuel and energy...

Biggest baby boom since Soviet times
Only a year ago, Russia's demographic crisis was in the spotlight. The country was depopulating at a rate of 700,000 a year. It drove the government to declare 2008 the year of the family and to come up with policies to boost the birth rate. And results show they seem to be working.

What kind of assistance will be rendered to young families? VLADIMIR PUTIN: Support of young families and motherhood is very important. Look, even the countries which regard it as a priority and allocate massive resources still cannot solve the demographic problem. The more money such countries as France and Sweden allocate the worse the demographic situation, the older the age when women decide to have a child. Its the...

Short visit of Tbilisi (Géorgie/Georgia)
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Mtkvari (Kura) River. From an early Georgian form Tpilisi derived both Armenian Teplis and Greek Tiflis, and the latter form was borrowed by Russian, so that until 1936 its official name in Russian was Тифлис (Tiflis) and until recently it was frequently referred to as Tiflis by non-Georgians.[1] The city covers an area of 726 km² (280.3 square miles) and has 1,093,000 inhabitants. Founded in the 5th century AD by Vakhtang Gorgasali, the Georgian King of Kartli (Iberia), and made into a capital in the 6th century, Tbilisi is a significant industrial, social, and cultural center. The city is also emerging as an important transit route for global energy and trade projects. Located...
