America’s China Worries – Part III

In recent decades, the South Pacific has been a friendly region for the US and its interests, including islands that sit on Asia’s doorstep. But the rise of China and its growing interest in the Pacific islands may be emerging as yet another area of possible concern. In this final article of a three-part series, author Bertil Lintner examines how China is moving in the region to fill the vacuum left by a distracted US. The Chinese government has been seeking to strengthen its influence among neighbors, as part of its competition with Taiwan and also in an attempt to counter the American presence in the Pacific. China’s rising profile has allowed growing numbers of Chinese immigrants to join the earlier Taiwanese immigrants in settling in the Pacific islands, gaining control of some business and trade. This has sparked resentment and, in some cases, violent protest among local populations against ethnic Chinese. In some instances Beijing has evacuated the affected citizens and things have cooled down. But China’s growing profile in the Pacific – and the fear that it would be at the expense of American presence and influence – is likely to remain a long-term concern. – YaleGlobal

Electronic Trash Village - China
September 2007 Every year, 35 million tonnes of electronic waste is exported to China to be scrapped. There the rubbish is broken down by hand, poisoning workers and polluting the environment. "Smoke from the computers is too strong to breathe", complains one disposal worker. "I feel dizzy and can't see any more". Many employees at the electronic disposal plant suffer from respiratory illness or skin diseases. They work for ten hours a day, with no protection from the hazardous chemicals.

The China Syndrome
This is a trailer I made for one of my all-time favorite movies, 'The China Syndrome.' The clips at the beginning were taken from 'The American Experience: Meltdown at Three Mile Island' and the music is 'My Name is Lincoln' from the movie 'The Island.' As per usual, putting a video on YouTube tends to screw up timing- please forgive any mistakes as far as that goes. No money is made off of this. I am just doing this as a tribute to 'The China Syndrome' and I hope everyone who watches this trailer will consider going out and renting or buying the film.

Giant Panda in China rips off man's jacket
China: Tourist has jacket ripped off his back by Giant Panda in open cage at Nature Reserve dedicated to survival of the endangered species (02 Nov 1992). The visitor to Chengdu Zoo sat with his back against the panda's railings for a picture to be taken. His jacket attracted the 75-kilogram (165 pound) panda's attention and the creature grabbed it, while the man was held by his friends, setting up a 'tug of war'. Future prospects for giant pandas have just been strengthened by a Chinese 10-year plan that will cost about 50 million United States dollars. In May 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake struck the area around Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China, causing enormous loss of life, injuries and infrastructure damage, and severely affecting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The State University of New York, strongly supported by Governor David Paterson, has made the extraordinary gesture of welcoming 150 university students from Sichuan Province, to study at 22 campuses of the University at no charge for the coming academic year. As expressed by Governor Paterson, our mutual goal is to "provide these students with valuable leadership training to prepare them to return to China to assist with rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake".
