Analysis of the Chinese Anti-Satellite Weapon Test

Posted by Matt in February 15th, 2007

At 22:26 GMT, 11 January 2007, China slammed a kill vehicle into one of its dead metrological satellites, proving to the world that they were part of the small but unfortunately growing club of countries that can accomplish the difficult task of hypervelocity interceptions in space. As a signal to the world, this test highlighted both China’s technological prowess and the fact that China will not quietly stand by while the United States tries to expand its influence in the region with new measures such as the US-India nuclear deal. We have analyzed the orbits of the debris from this interception and from that put limits on the properties of the interceptor. We find that not only can China threaten low Earth orbit satellites, but, by mounting the same interceptor on one of its rockets capable of lofting a satellite into geostationary orbit, all of the US communications satellites.

China launches first data relay satellite
BEIJING, April 25 -- China lauched the country's first data relay satellite "Tianlian I" Friday night. The satellite was launched on a Long March-3C carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 11:35 p.m. (Beijing Time). The satellite will not go into function though untill the Shenzhou VII mission scheduled for the second half of 2008. Developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the satellite is the country's first ever data relay satellite. It will increase the time Shenzhou VII spaceship in communication with the ground, and improve the amount of data that can be transferred, according to Zhang Jianqi, top official with China's space programs. China launches disaster monitoring satellites
China launched two satellites to monitor the environment and natural disasters on Saturday. The satellites are the first of their kind put into space by China. They can closely track natural disasters, and provide quick assessments of damage to guide rescue and reconstruction work. China used satellite images to help assess damage to infrastructure after the massive Wenchuan earthquake in May.

China Launches New Communications Satellite
A Chinese Long March 3B rocket successfully placed the Chinasat-9 direct-broadcast television satellite into geostationary transfer orbit June 9 - a launch that caused public-relations discomfort for both Chinese authorities and satellite builder Thales Alenia Space, for different reasons. Chinasat 9, a Spacebus 4000 satellite platform, is expected to operate for 15 years at 92.2 degrees east longitude. Chinese government authorities have been upset with the French government in recent weeks following a demonstration-marred passage of the Olympic flame through Paris in April and the near-simultaneous decision by the Paris city council to make the Dalai Lama an honorary citizen - an act that the Chinese Foreign Ministry termed "a grave provocation." For that reason, industry officials...

China launches 2nd Olympic weather satellite
TAIYUAN, May 27 -- China launched a second Olympic weather forecasting satellite, the Fengyun-3 (FY-3), Tuesday morning. The satellite was launched on a Long March-4C carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province at 11:02 a.m. (Beijing Time). It entered the preset orbit 27 minutes later. Gao Huoshan, general director of the FY-3 research team, said the satellite would send back images with the highest spatial resolution of 250 meters and its temperature sensitivity would reach 0.1 degree Fahrenheit. Both indices were close to the most advanced level of similar satellites in the world. The highest spatial resolution of existing satellites in China had been 1.1 kilometers, according to Gao. "The 250-m resolution images will...

China launches 2nd Olympic weather satellite
China successfully launched its Fengyun three Meteorological Satellite, its second Olympic weather satellite, at the Launching Center in Taiyuan this morning. It will be put to use during the Beijing Olympic Games to help predict the weather. The Fengyun three series of satellites is China's second generation of Polar-Orbiting Meteorological Satellites. The FY-3 satellites are able to provide global sounding of 3-dimensional thermal structures of the atmosphere. Their global imaging technology also supports short-range weather forecasting and real-time monitoring of meteorological or hydrological disasters. And they can also provide the necessary data to derive important geophysical parameters and support researchers on global and climate change. A China Meteorological Administration...

IFJ: Restore NTD's China Broadcast
CHEN: We have an update on the situation with NTD's broadcast into Mainland China. Over two months ago, NTD's satellite broadcast was cut off by our satellite provider Eutelsat, because of what they claimed were technical difficulties. Well, now the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) says those so-called "technical difficulties" are looking, "increasingly bogus." In an August 20th press release, IFJ General Secretary Aiden White said this: "The likelihood is that official Chinese pressure has led to the exclusion of...NTDTV from access to the satellite. It's time to end this absurd posturing and let NTDTV get back on the air." The Chinese regime has been trying to shut down NTD since it was founded in 2001. NTD's satellite broadcasts have provided the only uncensored TV...

NTDTV Satellite Broadcasts to China Shut Off
Uncensored TV Service to China Shut Off Seven weeks away from the Olympics, millions of households in China are no longer receiving the satellite broadcast from the largest independent Chinese-language TV network. New York, June 23 -- On Monday, June 16th, at approximately 6:30 pm U.S. EST time, New Tang Dynasty Television's (NTDTV) satellite broadcast covering Asia suddenly stopped after more than four years on air. Eutelsat Communications, the satellite operator, said that its W5 satellite had experienced "an anomaly to part of its power generator subsystem" and it had "reduced by a small number the operating transponders on the satellite" in collaboration with the satellite's manufacturer, Thales Alenia Space. One week has passed, NTDTV's signal remains dark across Asia,...

Mainland Chinese Voice Satellite Frustrations
ANCHOR:
As you may know NTD's satellite signal has not been reaching mainland China for over a week now. Eutelsat, the company that owns the satellite, has told NTD that there are technical issues that need to be worked out. Ever since the blackout began, we have been receiving reports from NTD viewers in the mainland, who are voicing their frustrations. Today, we bring you the story of Mr. He from Hebei Province.
STORY:
Mr. He is an NTD viewer who lives in Hebei Province, China. He says the trend for many young Chinese nowadays is to shy away from watching news broadcasts. That's because they feel state run programs are one sided. But, according to Mr. He, after watching overseas media, like NTD, Chinese tend to have a change of heart. [Mr. He, NTD Viewer]:
 "We feel...
