Hamas-Israel ceasefire brings hope to Gaza - 18 Jun 08 Israel has confirmed it has agreed to a six-month truce with Palestinian armed groups including Hamas, the country's public radio service has reported. Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister and Ehud Barak, defence minister, approved the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire a day after Egyptian and Palestinian officials announced a deal. The Palestinian territory's been the scene of deadly clashes with the Israeli army since a Hamas takeover last year. Egypt, which has worked for months to broker the deal, is urging both sides to do everything they can to make the peace last.
