The Nine Tons of UF6 Gas Brought to Natanz Could Be Used for One Atom Bomb

On February 20, 2007, the conservative Iranian news agency Aftab said, in a report attributed to Western sources, that Iran had “at the beginning of the month transferred a container of nine tons of UF6 gas to the nuclear facilities at Natanz. If they wanted to, the Iranians could [now], using this gas, operate a number of centrifuges… If these nine tons of UF6 in this container undergo an enrichment process, it will be possible to produce from them a single atom bomb.” [1]

Iran: What next steps?

The IAEA’s critical report on Iran, while widely expected, the Associated Press notes, was important because it could serve as the trigger for the council to start deliberating on new sanctions meant to punish Tehran for its intransigence over its nuclear program.

What kind of sanctions, how long it would take for the international community to agree on them, whether they would work, and whether the U.S., and possibly Israel, are prepared to wait for the answers, is far from clear.

While publicly emphasizing diplomacy, the Bush administration has been pushing ahead with sanctions activities of its own.
