Lithuania threatens to block EU-Russia agreement

Posted by Matt in February 26th, 2007

EU talks with Russia on a wide-ranging co-operation agreement were vetoed last November by Poland, over Russia’s ban on Polish meat imports.

Fears of over-dependence on Russian energy supplies have led the three Baltic states and Poland to agree in principle on the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania by 2015.

Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus told Reuters on 23 February: “There is an agreement between Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland to secure energy independence by building more than one nuclear reactor,” while Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas said that a deal to build the plant was expected to be signed mid-2008, with a tender to supply the reactors due by early 2009.

Protectionism ? The europeans wants to protect its companies, so .. the non-communitaries countries has the same right. The amendments to 2003/54/ec and 2003/55/ec forbid one company to simultaneously manage the production and transport of electric power or gas. The amendment would split regional energy companies (Gaz de France, Electricite de France, E.ON, RWE, Endesa) into generation and distribution companies. READ MORE ..

European energy security under threat
The European Commission wants to limit non-EU members operating on its energy transportation networks. Russia says it won't be able to guarantee security of supply if the EU approves its so-called "third energy package". The consequences were widely discussed at the international Gas Forum in Berlin.

European Smart Energy Tour - Part I
In the spring of 2008, 22 students, professors, professionals, and community members from San Luis Obispo, California embarked on a journey to Europe. They traveled to England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden to learn about smart energy solutions. The group visited cities that exhibited best practices for sustainability in the following areas: renewable energy, innovative transportation, green building, smart growth, energy efficiency, and conservation. The group sought out those areas to be able to bring back some of the lessons and ideas to the United States.

The future of Solar Energy in Europe
Solar energy is not just for sunny countries. This is what the tiny Danish island of Aero is determined to prove by hosting the world's largest solar thermal plant. And in Spain, a recent law requires all new apartment buildings to have solar panels. A sign that though still not the norm, solar energy is finding its way into Europe's homes. from: Euronews, 28/03/2008

Securing Energy for Europe, Europäische Energieversorgung
http://www.b4energy-link.de Securing energy supplies On 7 November 2006 a memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation was signed between Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliev and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. The agreement is a further indicator of the EU's policy to diversify energy suppliers throughout the region in order to secure supply to the European market. For European consumers, the Caspian energy reserves and the pipelines that bring the oil and gas to Europe's doorstep are increasing in importance. The EU currently imports 50% of its energy needs but that figure is set to rise to 70% by 2030.

Europe between the climate change and the energy security
Out with the old, in with the new. In a bid to boost energy security, Lithuania wants two new nuclear reactors to be up and running within the next seven years. The EU obliges the Ignalina power plant's last Soviet-era units - considered unsafe by western standards - to be shut down less than three years from now.

Generation Wind
The coming of a new generation of energy supply Wind energy has a huge potential. The EU Heads of State have unanimously agreed that 20% of the EU's energy, in the form of electricity, heating and transport fuels, must come from renewable energy sources in 2020. For electricity alone, the share from renewable energy will have to increase from 15% today to 34% thirteen years from now, according to the European Commission. Provided the European Parliament and Council adopt an effective Renewable Energy Directive before the end of 2008, wind energy could provide over 12% of Europe's electricity by 2020. Generation Wind is a campaign that highlights the barriers currently hindering the development of wind energy - some of which will be addressed if the draft Renewable Energy Directive is...
