The amendments to 2003/54/ec and 2003/55/ec forbid one company to simultaneously manage the production and transport of electric power or gas. European energy security under threat
The European Commission wants to limit non-EU members operating on its energy transportation networks. Russia says it won't be able to guarantee security of supply if the EU approves its so-called "third energy package". The consequences were widely discussed at the international Gas Forum in Berlin.

European Smart Energy Tour - Part I
In the spring of 2008, 22 students, professors, professionals, and community members from San Luis Obispo, California embarked on a journey to Europe. They traveled to England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden to learn about smart energy solutions. The group visited cities that exhibited best practices for sustainability in the following areas: renewable energy, innovative transportation, green building, smart growth, energy efficiency, and conservation. The group sought out those areas to be able to bring back some of the lessons and ideas to the United States.

Securing energy supplies
On 7 November 2006 a memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation was signed between Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliev and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. The agreement is a further indicator of the EU's policy to diversify energy suppliers throughout the region in order to secure supply to the European market. For European consumers, the Caspian energy reserves and the pipelines that bring the oil and gas to Europe's doorstep are increasing in importance. The EU currently imports 50% of its energy needs but that figure is set to rise to 70% by 2030.

The EU obliges the Ignalina power plant's last Soviet-era units - considered unsafe by western standards - to be shut down less than three years from now.

Generation Wind
The coming of a new generation of energy supply
Wind energy has a huge potential. The EU Heads of State have unanimously agreed that 20% of the EU's energy, in the form of electricity, heating and transport fuels, must come from renewable energy sources in 2020.
For electricity alone, the share from renewable energy will have to increase from 15% today to 34% thirteen years from now, according to the European Commission. Provided the European Parliament and Council adopt an effective Renewable Energy Directive before the end of 2008, wind energy could provide over 12% of Europe's electricity by 2020.

The European Council's decision on a European energy policy includes the binding target of 20% of the EU's total energy consumption to come from renewables by 2020 and 10% from biofuels. Member States need to prepare to reach this target, and related industries need to prepare themselves and their technologies to do the same.
With the March Council's decisions on energy as a backdrop, the purpose of this seminar is to present the current situation of bioenergy industries in Europe, and show which measures and legislation might be taken in order to stay on track to meet the Council's targets.
