China: ‘Peaceful rising’ hides hegemonic intentions

As China has gained economic clout, it has also been more willing to flex its muscles internationally. This has raised skepticism as well as anxieties in Asia and elsewhere regarding its self-proclaimed commitment to “peaceful rising.”

Actually, China’s international activities show “peaceful rising” to be nothing more than camouflage for a hegemonic agenda. For example, its recent huge increases in military spending have raised eyebrows not only among defense planners in Taiwan but in the United States, Japan, India and Russia. China has invested a great deal of its newly acquired wealth in beefing up its military offensive capacity by developing advanced weapons systems or purchasing them from abroad.
