High-flying ambitions, as China’s aviation industry takes off

Posted by Matt in March 22nd, 2007

Call it the ambitious launch of the Great Leap Upward: After already demonstrating - much to Washington’s alarm - that it can use high-tech missiles to destroy its old satellites in space, China has announced that it plans to deepen its involvement in the commercial-aviation sector in a big way. In an effort that will aim to compete head-on with U.S.-based Boeing and Europe’s Airbus consortium, the government in Beijing has “given the official green light” to plans “to design and build airplanes that can carry more than 150 passengers.” For Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who presided over a State Council Executive Committee meeting late last month “to hear the feasibility report of a team of specialists on the new plane program….[d]eveloping its own large aircraft is a priority of China’s longer-term scientific and technological development strategy.” (Xinhua)

Aviation Disasters - China Airlines Flight 642
China Airlines Flight 642 crashed when landing in Hong Kong during terrible weather (tropical storm winds and rain). Very little footage exists of the crash, so I added a few photos in to show the aftermath. I am very new to video editing (this is my first project), and as such the film is very basic and straightforward. I used Windows Movie Maker to edit and arrange the material. NOTE: There seems to be some contention among viewers as to the airline depicted. It was technically Mandarin Airlines, but that airline is the subsidiary of (owned by) China Airlines, and as such, the media and official reports all refer to it as China Airlines flight 642.

China aviation turnout seals success of show
It was an impressive turnout of China's aviation industry at the Asian Aerospace International Expo and Congress this month in Hong Kong -- and provided a strong professional message, says Clive Richardson, Senior Vice President with organiser Reed Exhibitions. Richardson says Hong Kong's first major air show was very positive, underlying the success of the "business only" approach to the event, after it switched to the territory from Singapore. He adds that the harbour fly-past of the A380 Airbus, the world's largest jet, raised the profile of Hong Kong in the aeronautics business.

China Air Fire
The Boeing 737-800 belonging to China Airlines departed Taipei, Taiwan, and landed at Okinawa, Japan. Okinawa Airport traffic controllers had received no report from the pilot indicating anything was wrong as the plane came in to land and even as it stopped near the terminal to unload passengers. Soon after the plane arrived at the stand, a fire erupted in or near the left engine. All 157 passengers fled the Boeing 737-800 unhurt on inflated emergency slides. The eight-member crew also safely left the plane. A figure believed to be the pilot hung onto the cockpit window for several seconds before dropping to the tarmac and sprinting away from the exploding plane. When all occupants had evacuated, a large explosion occurred in the centre of the airplane (:49). If you look closely by then...

Chinese Military Stealth Fighter Project
China's two major fighter aircraft manufacturers, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) and Chengdu Aircraft Industry Co. (CAC), are both working on advanced 4th-generation fighter designs that could enter the PLAAF service as early as 2015. While Shenyang has been engaged in a brand new F/A-22-class stealth fighter design known as J-12, Chengdu has been focusing its development effort on an enlarged twin-engine, stealth version of its J-10 fighter possibly designated J-13. J-13 may be powered by two improved AL-41 turbofan engines with thrust-vectoring nozzles and possibly supersonic cruise capability too, giving a maximum take-off weight of 20t and a maximum altitude speed of Mach 2.45. If this is proven to be true, the J-13 will be a high-performance heavyweight fighter superior to the...
