CIA says North Korea nuclear test a failure

Posted by Matt in March 28th, 2007

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea’s nuclear test last October was a failure and gives no credence to Pyongyang’s claim to being a nuclear weapons state, U.S. CIA Director Michael Hayden was quoted as saying by a South Korean newspaper on Wednesday.

North Korea National Anthem
An independent kingdom for much of its long history, Korea was occupied by Japan in 1905 following the Russo-Japanese War. Five years later, Japan formally annexed the entire peninsula. Following World War II, Korea was split with the northern half coming under Soviet-sponsored Communist domination. After failing in the Korean War (1950-53) to conquer the US-backed Republic of Korea (ROK) in the southern portion by force, North Korea (DPRK), under its founder President KIM Il Sung, adopted a policy of ostensible diplomatic and economic "self-reliance" as a check against excessive Soviet or Communist Chinese influence. The DPRK demonized the US as the ultimate threat to its social system through state-funded propaganda, and molded political, economic, and military policies around the core...

NY Philharmonic gives concert in North Korea
Hi, I'm Kristin Volk with you UPI news headline on this Tuesday, the 26 day of February 2008. The New York Philharmonic is now the first major American cultural group to have performed in North Korea. The orchestra began the performance earlier today with North Korea's national anthem and continued with The Star-Spangled Banner. Both reportedly received standing ovations. North Korean leader Kim Jong Il apparently wasn't in attendance. The U.S. government agreed on the Philharmonic's visit when there was major progress to end the country's nuclear weapons program. Thousands of Palestinian protesters are calling for an end to an Israeli blockade on Gaza. They're burning tires and forming a human chain with nearly 40 thousand people along the strip's 25-mile length. Israel has threatened...

North Korea army parade
Here's something you don't see every day. This is a mashup of adorable propaganda videos I found via URL hacking on the web site of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in November 2004. These videos were removed from the site (perhaps, I speculate, because of the translation errors in the narration, particularly involving Kim Jong-Il's title). You can see plenty of Soviet and Chinese cultural and politcal influence, overlaid on Korea's basically conservative, Confucian, authoritarian mind-set. Transcript: "... independent, self supporting and self reliant and national defense. The parading units start marching across the square amid resounding cheers. Columns from military schools of different levels are marching proudly, demonstrating the vitality of the party's line of making...

Communist Toehold - North Korea
May 1995 A child struggles to smile at our camera because it is forbidden to look sad. Farm labourers wear make-up in the fields and at a cement factory no workers or cement can be seen. North Korea is determined to present a perfect face to the world but cannot hide the failure of its isolationist policy. Building projects stand idle and the country is having a hard time adjusting to life without communist leader Kim Il Sung. Each day thousands gather to weep before his statue. From Pyongyang we visit the 38th parallel - watched by tense southern soldiers. At the International Sports and Culture Festival for Peace North Korea's wrestling champion triumphs over his blond American opponent to rapturous applause - a staged win in an allegedly hostile world.

Escape from North Korea - North Korea
Aug 2007 So many people have defected from North Korea that the government is now building a wall along the Chinese border. This exclusive report follows one family's dangerous exodus. At a safe house in China, a brother and sister collapse into each other arms. For months, 'Uncle Jung' has been trying to smuggle his sister and her family out of North Korea. Today, they crossed the Tumen river into China. "We wanted to wait for darkness but were afraid the guards would find us", explains Park Myong Kwan. "So we just jumped into the river". One risky journey may have ended for the Park family but another is just beginning. China regularly returns refugees to North Korea where they face almost certain execution. In contrast, Thailand deports immigrants to South Korea. Over the next week,...
