The Glonass global navigation system will be inaugurated later this year, Russia’s first deputy prime minister said Wednesday. India is said to be a major partner in the Glonass System which is said to be a rival to the U.S. GPS and European Galileo System.
“I have no doubt that by the end of the year, Roskosmos [the Federal Space Agency] will honor its commitments, for which state subsidies were issued promptly, and orbit 18 Glonass satellites,” Sergei Ivanov said.
Glonass is a Russian version of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS), which is designed for both military and civilian use, and allows users to identify their positions in real time. The system can also be used in geological prospecting.
