Algerian gasfield buries carbon dioxide
Deep in the Algerian Sahara, millions of cubic metres of carbon dioxide, one of the chief greenhouse gases, are being stocked in underground reservoirs. The idea is to stop the CO2 reaching the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.

Oil hits $100, Dow drops
Jan 2 - Oil jumped past $100 a barrel on the first trading day of the year, sending stocks to a first trading day loss record.Violence in OPEC countries Nigeria and Algeria helped drive oil prices across the $100 mark, just a day ahead of a US government oil supply report. Bobbi Rebell reports.

By removing salt from seawater, GE's newest desalination plant in Algiers will supply enough drinking water to serve 25 percent of the capital city's population.
The Hamma Water Desalination facility is located in Algiers, Algeria. This city, resting in a natural bay on the northernmost edge of Africa, has long been a site of change. Over the centuries the course of history has flowed through this region.
Today, Algiers is a proud mix of people and cultures. The coastal city's population has grown to 3.5 million. In a country where only 3 percent of the land is arable, water is a necessity.

El Paso ship, the Paul Kayser
I shot this film on 9-25-78 using a 16mm Canon Scoopic. Sorry, I wasn't able to record sound, the Scoopic was loaded with silent film I was on a low-budget mission armed with a low-technology film camera.....
The El Paso Paul Kayser was a large Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) tanker when she made her maiden voyage from Algeria to Elba Island, Georgia in September 1978. I was fortunate to be present when the ship came in on her first trip....
I transfered the film to a videotape in 1978 and my old videotape footage has degraded so bad, the resolution is 75% less than it was 30 years ago, the clarity suffers and the colors are almost gone. Please overlook the quality, graininess and washed-out colors....
This ship only made a few trips before she scraped into rocks near the coast of Spain....

Krechba Carbon Dioxide Storage
This video from Agence France-Presse takes you to the Krechba gas field in Algeria, where 1 million tons of carbon dioxide from a natural gas facility are pumped underground.
Financed by British Petroleum and two other partners, the Krechba project could allow companies like BP to keep pumping fossil fuels, but to prevent some of the CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
The world emits about 27 billion tons of CO2 per year, so the Krechba project is putting only a small dent in greenhouse emissions, but some say that the dent is bigger and more immediate that what could be achieved through alternative energy solutions. It's also considerably cheaper.

A group of teens forged new friendships and looked at the world around them thru their mobile phone. They came from Jordan, Lebanon, Tunis, Algeria, India, Oman, Libya, UAE, Kuwait, Holland, and Egypt.
This clip was made as an exercise at the workshop we piloted. It's an experiment using mobile phone cameras while observing/commenting on the experience around the congress. The objective was to realize the power one has thru that darling little mobile phone, as well as the energy of collaboration and giving voice.
