Israel: Olmert Moved from Lame Duck to Dead Duck

Posted by Matt in May 1st, 2007

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s political future has long seemed dim, but a new report may cast it into complete darkness. The Winograd Commission, a government-appointed group of independent investigators examining missteps in last summer’s war in Lebanon issued a damning assessment of Israeli leaders. Variations on the word “fail” appeared a whopping 175 times (Economist), roughly once per page, most notably where Olmert is charged with “a serious failure in exercising judgment, responsibility and prudence.” In an interview with CFR.org’s Bernard Gwertzman, Mideast expert David Makovsky says Olmert was a lame duck leader, but the Winograd report leaves him a “dead duck.”

Israel’s political System

The elected prime minister is the candidate who receives more than half of the valid votes, provided that he is also a Knesset member. Prime ministers are expected to serve four-year terms, though these may be shortened by a vote of no-confidence in the Knesset. Such votes include naming a replacement candidate, who is given the opportunity to form his or her own government. If that candidate is unsuccessful, the Knesset is dissolved and new elections are held.

The Israel Lobby (Marije Meerman, VPRO Backlight 2007)
For many years now the American foreign policy has been characterized by the strong tie between the United States and Israel. Does the United States in fact keep Israel on its feet? And how long will it continue to do so? In March 2006 the American political scientists John Mearsheimer (University of Chicago) and Steve Walt (Harvard) published the controversial article 'The Israel Lobby and US foreign policy'. In it they state that it is not, or no longer, expedient for the US to support and protect present-day Israel. The documentary sheds light on both parties involved in the discussion: those who wish to maintain the strong tie between the US and Israel, and those who were critical of it and not infrequently became 'victims' of the lobby. The question arises to what extend the...

Hero performed by Michael Israel in New York
Don't miss the end...wonderful surprises all the way through. HERO is an amazing accomplishment, a performance you watch with your heart. This work has helped raise interest and awareness for many charities and worthy causes. This performance was produced by Wolfgang Films. HERO explores commitment to an ideal. It asks the question: What endeavor would you undertake knowing full well that the odds are you will fail? What would you give your all to knowing it's likely you will be severely injured or even die trying? What is the greatest possible reward and in that thought, what is the most valuable and priceless thing on earth? Paul and Chrissie are a young couple, in their twenties, and have started a new family. Story as told by Chrissie I'll never forget that day. My...

Cool Facts about Israel - New Version - Israeli Music
As a small country with limited natural resources, Israel depends on its most important natural resource -- its people. Israel's achievements are uniquely its own, a mixture of high idealism, ingenuity and self-reliance. In almost 60 short years, Israel has accomplished what many nations haven't been able to do in centuries. Israel's one natural resource is its brainpower, with a driving demand for survival and success against all odds, Israel developed an energetic and ambitious society. On the occasion of the soon 60th Day of Independence, I take the opportunity of listing together some of the outstanding facts and achievements of our beloved Israel. Enjoy! Holly
