US Oil Giants Exit Boosts Chavez Only Short-Term

Posted by Matt in June 28th, 2007

President Hugo Chavez won instant political capital by forcing U.S. oil giants from Venezuela but the nationalist moves pose economic challenges that could undermine his socialist revolution.

Chavez, who prides himself on his tirades against U.S. President George W. Bush, this week struck his most costly blow against any company since coming to power in 1999 by seizing oil fields from Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips.

GOOD: Oil Addiction
If we're addicted to oil, our twelve-step program should begin with admitting that we have a problem. As the price of oil creeps higher, finding new energy sources is more important than ever. But the search for alternatives, combined with environmental disruptions, is putting new pressures on other essentials like food. There are some things that are going well in the world. Right now, the economy is not one of them. http://www.goodmagazine.com/ Animation & Design by Chris Weller Directed by Max Joseph Music: "Genesis" by Justice http://www.myspace.com/etjusticepourtous http://www.christopherweller.com http://www.chimponachain.com

Peak Oil: Gas Prices, Supply Depletion & Energy Crisis SHORT
We are entering the Peak Oil era. The growth of oil production is slowing, driving up oil and gasoline gas prices, firing inflation, driving unemployment, straining our global economy, and threatening to collapse our entire system. We are reaching Peak Oil and we are unprepared. Teacher Aaron Wissner, in a compact 10 minutes video summary, details Peak Oil, the evidence, the impacts, and the solutions. See the full one-hour video at LocalFuture.org. Also, at YouTube, see the conclusion, of that presentation, part 5 of 5, which highlights the impacts, underlying problem, and solutions to Peak Oil.

Oil War - Nigeria
June 2005 Nigeria's lucrative oil reserves may have enriched its politicians but they've brought little but misery to ordinary people. Now, a rebel group is fighting for a share of the profits. "I need help. I need help," begs a woman, clutching her young children in despair. Her home has just been demolished to create luxury housing for foreign oil workers. "The oil boom has turned into the oil doom!" laments Pastor Lekia. Across the Niger Delta, there's growing resentment at the oil industry. "Corruption pervades the whole place, starting with the way contracts are awarded," complains lawyer Ledum Mittee. "There seems to be some sort of collusion between the oil companies and those in power." But militia leader Asari Dokubo has vowed to sever that link. He's fighting to seize control of...

Peak Oil - 45min. documentary
See full film here: http://www.booserver.com/projects.php?ProjectID=3030 September 2006 Is the age of cheap oil about to come to an end? According to many experts, we are about to reach the point of "peak oil" -- the level at which supply can no longer keep up with demand. This, say the doomsayers, could send economies spinning into turmoil and up-end our comfortable, urban lifestyles. But others claim predictions like this are simply scaremongering. They believe supply will match demand for decades to come. So who's telling the truth? 'Peak Oil' investigates.

PERMACULTURE & PEAK OIL: Beyond 'Sustainability'
David Holmgren is co-originator (with Bill Mollison) of the permaculture concept and author of the recent book, PERMACULTURE: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability. He talks about the need to move beyond the lulling hope that 'green tech' breakthroughs will allow world-wide 'sustainable consumption' to the recognition that dwindling oil supplies inevitably mean a mandatory 'energy descent' for human civilization across the planet. He argues that permaculture principles provide the best guide to a peaceful societal 'powering down." http://www.holmgren.com.au/html/Publications/Principles.html

Addicted to Oil - Part 1 of 5
Thomas Friedman Reporting. http://shrinkster.com/gbv (Discovery.com) No doubt about it. America is addicted to oil. We've had shortages & price hikes before, but this is definitely not your parents' energy crisis. Today, kicking the habit is an urgent necessity. Urgent because we're funding both sides on the war on terrorism...
