Exchange Students Find a New Way to Deal With Germans.

US students are having a hard time in Germany, as they find themselves having to justify Washington policy from day to day. A new pilot project in German schools is meant to help Americans deal with the endless drill.

Many of the roughly 3,200 US students enrolled in foreign study programs in Germany share Janssen’s experience. They are reluctant ambassadors, routinely taken to task by students and even complete strangers for the perceived offences of their government at home — an affront that visiting students and academics from China, Russia and Arab countries rarely encounter.

My Comment:

Let’s be clear here. Germans hate Americans. If you going to be an exchange student in Germany then you had better understand that.

My notes to the German people:

1. You are incredibly rude.

2. Who put you in charge of the world?

3. It was Americans who died on 9/11, not Germans.

4. You have done little to help us in the fight against Islamism, and you’ve bitched about what little you’ve done.

I disabled comments and deleted all ~400 comments because I got tired of the hate and shallow arguments coming from both sides. Every time I get an email ... and it is exhausting. This could be an interesting discussion but the problem is that most people who say stupid things in comments have either never left USA or Europe ... so they simply have no idea what are they talking about ... Most importantly people confuse patriotism with self-criticism. The fact that...

As a German regular reader of your blog who is himself a Christian Conservative (and would Vote for Bush if I had the chance to do so) I think I have to answer ;-)

Not all Germany hate America but unfortunatly were are many doing this…

To your points
1.: Mostly True - but it is not always a disadvantage.
Have experienced from other people from other countries some kind of “false/artifical friendliness” - pretending to be nice but behind the back behaving to the contrary - and there I prefere the more German direct way which appears at least for me more honest.

2. No one fortunatly but thats fine - I personally don’t feel very comfortable with German asparations to become a permanent member of the UN security council
(I would vote for abolish the whole UN)

3.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/10/29/wtc.deaths/
“An estimated 500 foreign nationals from 91 nations were believed to have been killed in the trade center attack. ”

Up to 100 German casulties were expected http://www.shortnews.de/start.cfm?id=300137

4. Unfortunatly this is true
One reason is the Anti-Americanism in the society the other one that the Social Democrats were also not to keen to get involved there - the chancellor at this time from the Social Democrats prefered to flirt with the Chinese 8and even wanted to lift up the Arms embargo)

Hi Merowig,

OK, you got me on a few technicalities.

1. It’s true that many different nationalities died on 9/11, including Germans

2. Not all Germans hate Americans, just about 70% don’t particularly like Americans.

3. Not all Germans are rude. Perhaps they’re a little too direct which can come across as rude.

4. Are Germans in charge of the world? OK, not exactly, but Europeans are or at least think they should be. This includes Scandinavians too.

I commend you on being a Christian German. That has got to be a difficult thing.

There is one word that separates Europeans and Americans: Christianity.

Europeans have difficulty understanding America, and generally don’t like America because a lot more Americans go to the Christian church. Most Europeans don’t go to church at all. They look down on Americans because of this.

Show me a European that goes to the Christian church regularly, and I will show you a friend of America. They will generally like America, but not necessarily everything. This is as opposed to non-church going Europeans that dislike most things about America.

For sure many Europeans think that if they would run everything the world would be a better place - this comes from wrong idealism and some feelings of supremacy feelings.

People are good in ignoring facts (who could it be otherwhise that a high poprpotion think that Israel and the USA are the biggest threats to world peace (and more or less ignoring China and the Islamic countries).
To hate the US and themselve (own culture, etc) is a popular phenomen.

Many have forgotton that their freedom was a result of fights (e.g. French Revolution, World War I and World War II, Romanian revolution in 1989) - and that struggle has to continue if this freedom shouldn’t be lost in the future.

But there also positive signs - Europe slowly starts to fight back the current islamisation process and China is not any longer seen by everybody as the great friendly trading partner - hopefully it’s not too late.
