Russia is often said to walk toward the future with its head turned backwards. Russia’s past is called “unpredictable,†in the sense that it’s almost always politicized and interpreted differently every time to please the current rulers. And in this context, it seems even sadder that lately the gaze of this backward-looking head has looked more favorably on Stalinism.

Tunnel of Death (Lefortovo Tunnel, Russia) The 3,150 m long Lefortovo Tunnel in Russia is the longest 'in-city' tunnel in all of Europe. There is a river running over it and water leaks at some points. When the temperature reaches minus 38 degrees like it did last winter, the road freezes and the result is the attached video taken during a single day with the tunnel camera. Girls as young as nine have been attacked and murdered by ultra-nationalists, targeted simply because they aren't Russian. Dmitri leads the extremist Slav's Union group.
