Chinese Space Weapon, A.S.A.T
Anti-satellite weapon At 5:28 p.m. EST January 11, 2007, the People's Republic of China successfully destroyed a defunct Chinese weather satellite, FY-1C. The destruction was reportedly carried out by a modified medium-range ballistic missile DF-21 with a kinetic ASAT warhead [3] similar in concept to the American Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle. FY-1C was a weather satellite orbiting Earth in polar orbit at an altitude of about 537 miles (865 km), with a mass of about 750 kg (1,650 lb). Launched in 1999, it was the fourth satellite in the Feng Yun series. The missile was lauched from a mobile Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) vehicle at Xichang (28°14′49″N 102°01′30″E / 28.247, 102.025) and the warhead destroyed the satellite in a head-on collision at an extremely high...

China to Launch 1st Space Walk Mission on Thursday
China will launch its third manned spacecraft Shenzhou-7 from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province in the northwest on Thursday, a spokesperson with China's manned space program said on Wednesday. The spacecraft, carrying astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng, was to blast off between 9:07 p.m. and 10:27 p.m. (Beijing Time), said Wang Zhaoyao. One of the major tasks of the mission would be extravehicular activity (EVA), or known as space walk, the first of its kind attempted by Chinese astronauts, Wang said. The success of the task will mark a remarkable step in space exploration for China, whose long-term target is to eventually set up a space station. Other tasks included the release of a small monitoring satellite and trials of satellite data relay, said...

Space Race With China?
Before China carried out an anti-satellite test in January 2007, some U.S. policy-makers, including NASA Administrator Michael Griffin and the U.S. House China Working Group, advocated greater cooperation between the United States and China in space. After the test, which created a massive cloud of space debris that angered international space professionals and alarmed the American public, increased references to U.S.-China competition and hints of a new space race drowned out calls for cooperation. Using the experience they gained from visiting China several times in the last eight months, analysts Jeffrey Lewis and Gregory Kulacki will evaluate the costs and benefits of cooperation and competition between the United States and China in light of the history of Chinese interest in ASAT...

Shenzhou-7 lift off
JIUQUAN, Gansu, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's third manned spacecraft Shenzhou-7 blasted off from the northwestern Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Thursday, carrying three astronauts to attempt the country's first-ever space walk. Three Chinese astronauts blasted off on the country's third human space voyage Thursday, beginning a mission that will include the Chinese space program's first spacewalk. Zhai Zhigang, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng, all 42-year-old military pilots, crawled into the cramped Shenzhou 7 spacecraft during the final three hours of the countdown. Shenzhou 7, mounted to the tip of a 191-foot-tall Long March 2F rocket, lifted off at 1310 GMT (9:10 a.m. EDT) from the Jiuquan launch center in northwestern China. The blastoff marked the first piloted Chinese space...

Chinese taikonaut walks in space CCTV report
A Chinese astronaut has become the first in his country's history to take a walk in space. In an operation broadcast live on national TV, fighter pilot Zhai Zhigang emerged from the capsule orbiting the Earth to wave a Chinese flag. Mr Zhai, 42, stayed outside the capsule for 15 minutes while his two fellow astronauts stayed in the spacecraft. The exercise is seen as key to China's ambition to build an orbiting station in the next few years. Mr Zhai began the manoeuvre just after 1630 Beijing Time (0830 GMT) on Saturday, and completed it about 15 minutes later. "I'm feeling quite well. I greet the Chinese people and the people of the world," he said as he climbed out of the Shenzhou VII capsule. His colleague, Liu Boming, also briefly got his head out of the capsule to hand him the...
