China, “cancer villages” on the increase thanks to government’s indifference

Posted by Matt in November 9th, 2007

Large chemical plants, backbone of the country’s industrial development, are built in China’s rural areas, close to small villages, where each year deaths due to cancer increase. The government denounces the rise in cases linked to industrial waste but refuses to close down the plants or move the villages.

China's Pollution Busters - China
Nov 2007 In the past six years, infant birth defects in China have increased by an unprecedented 40%. This rise is being blamed on pollution from factories. Now green campaigners are taking on the multinationals. "The untreated waste is pumped out secretly at night", states activist Wu Deng Ming, pointing at a water outlet leading from a factory into a river. "People living along the river have enlarged livers", claims one local. They suffer from: "loss of appetite or cancer and all sorts of terminal diseases". Although strong laws governing pollution exist, these are regularly flouted. "Some local officials give protection to polluters", claims Ma Jun. In an attempt to put pressure on polluters, campaigners are naming and shaming guilty companies online. "We let people know that this...

China's air pollution is one of the worst in the world: - leader in sulfur emissions - second largest producer of greenhouse gases - China ranks 94 out of 133 countries listed in the Environmental Performance Index (Yale University). 70% of Chinese monitored cities are moderately to severely polluted (they don't meet the World Health Organization Air Quality Standards). 33% of urban dwellers breathe toxic air, equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. Pollution in China
Over 400,000 people in China each year die premature deaths due to pollution. Just 1% of the population living in China breathe what the European Union considers clean air. China knows about its problems, though, and have been trying to find solutions. While some effort has been made, there's still a long way to go. This is one step forward to the finish. China Air Pollution - Hong Kong
Air pollution is becoming a major problem in China. China has been creating a lot air pollutants affecting its neighbouring countries. Hong Kong which has not much industrial activities has been affected very badly by the pollution created in China. Smog becomes very common during winter as the wind carries a lot of pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxided, carbon monoxide, and ozone from the north (China). The short film was taken at around 8 am on May 7 2007 which was a Monday morning. There had been virtually no activities going on in Hong Kong but still pollutants were blown from Mainland China to Hong Kong. The major cause of pollution in Guangdong is believed to be power generation. The Mainland Chinese Communist government has been unable to control power...

Air Pollution in China : Case of Hong Kong (2)
This is a follow up video of the one that shows serious smog in Hong Kong created by a hugh amount of pollutants blown from China (shot a few weeks ago). The huge difference between the level of smog is believed to be due to a change in wind direction. In the previous video, the serious smog in Hong Kong was a result of wind blowing from the north west directly from China. Fu Shan, an area in China, which is a highly polluted hosting a lot of heavy industries, such as steel refinery and car making, is located in the north west of Hong Kong. This video, which is shot on May 30, 2007, shows exactly the same location in Tuen Mun, New Territories, Hong Kong. However, there is no smog at all. Despite the weather being cloudy, one can still see some blue sky very clearly. The buildings...

[Channel 4 News] China pollution KOs marathon bid
2008.03.10 By Lucy Manning: "Ethiopia's marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie blames pollution for his decision not to run in the Beijing Olympics marathon. He's the world record holder - but Haile Gebrselassie won't be running the marathon in this summer's Olympic games. The Ethiopian runner, who suffers from asthma, said the massive pollution in China was a threat to his health. Gerbselassie said he would compete in the 10,000 metre event instead. He's not the only runner to express worries about China's climate problem. Britain's Paula Radcliffe has called in pollution experts to help her Olympic plans."
