Russia ‘may deploy missiles in Belarus’

Posted by Matt in November 14th, 2007

A senior general warned Wednesday that Russia could deploy short-range missiles to Belarus as part of efforts to counter the planned deployment of U.S. missile defense sites in Europe, Russian news reports said.

Col. Gen. Vladimir Zaritsky, the chief of artillery and rocket forces for the Russian Ground Troops, said that “any action meets a counteraction, and this is the case with elements of the U.S. missile defense in Poland and the Czech Republic,” the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Belarus may host Russian missiles
Russian Iskander missiles could be supplied to Belarus in response to U.S. plans for a missile shield, according to Russia's Defence Ministry. A spokesman says it would also compensate for nuclear and conventional missiles destroyed as part of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with the U.S.

Merchants of War - Belarus
July 2006 Is Russia using Belarus as a proxy agent to sell weapons to regimes like Iran or North Korea? Reports are emerging which paint a disturbing picture. For more than a decade, President Lukashenko has maintained his grip on power using proceeds from the global arms trade. Victor Bout, one of the world's most notorious arms dealers, is believed to be behind Belarus' highest profile arms company, Beltechexport. "He's the man who helped Beltechexport become a major player in the arms market," states journalist Svetlana Klink. But as former KGB agent Sergio Anisko points out: "Bout has deep connections with the Russian military." Anisko claims Lukashenko is little more that the Krelim's puppet. "The FSB doesn't just have complete control of the Belarusian military, it dictates...

S-300 Surface-to-air missile system
The S-300 is a series of Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems by the Almaz Scientific Industrial Corporation all based on the initial S-300P version. It was developed as a system against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces, but later variations were also developed to intercept ballistic missiles. The closest western equivalent is the United States of America MIM-104 Patriot system or the US Navy RIM-66 Standard Missile 2 (SM-2). Both systems can engage multiple targets simultaneously, employ advanced guidance methods, and rely on a single phased array guidance radar to guide the missiles in the air. The S-300 deployment time is five minutes. The S-300 missiles are sealed rounds and require no maintenance over their lifetime. Export users include...

Return of the USSR
My little version of the Union's return somewhat seen from a Media standview. Seen from the paper and Television views. It would seem that the subtitles on some of the slides are not very clear at all, Ill try to fix this. This is what the news ticker pictures say: 1.Russian Troops invade Belarus 2.Ukrainian President announces capitulation 3.Russian flags replaced with new USSR "Hammer and Sickle" flag. 4.NATO forces successfully Soviet-Polish Border. 5. Greek refinery destroyed by Soviet Spec-Ops. 6.American NATO forces capture Kaliningrad 7. Mass grave found in W.Belarus, analysts say, "These bones are no older than 2005, pointing that the Soviet Regime is at fault here." 8.Baltics captured with fall of Tallinn. A State Duma Defense Committee member recently traveled to the Kaliningrad region where political and military leaders discussed the possibility of stationing high-precision operational and strategic missile complexes. The infrastructure would target U.S. and NATO military objects in Europe. A similar complex could be built in Belarus. Russia may also consider increased military cooperation with Venezuela. Obama's Position is identical to Bush's White House, so what change is going to occur? http://buchanan.org/blog/2008/08/pjb-blowback-from-bear-baiting/ PJB: Blowback from Bear Baiting posted by Linda By Patrick Buchanan Mikheil Saakashvili's decision to use the opening of the Olympic Games to cover Georgia's invasion of its breakaway province of South Ossetia must rank in stupidity with Gamal Abdel-Nasser's decision to close the Straits of Tiran to Israeli ships. Nasser's blunder cost him the Sinai in the Six-Day War. Saakashvili's blunder probably means permanent loss of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. After shelling and attacking what he claims is his own country, killing scores of his own Ossetian citizens and sending tens of thousands fleeing into Russia, Saakashvili's army was...

T-80 Main Battle Tank
From Wikipedia: The T-80 is a main battle tank which was designed in the Soviet Union and entered service in 1976. A development of the T-64, it was the first production tank in the world to be equipped with a gas turbine engine for main propulsion (the Stridsvagn 103 used a supplementary gas turbine by 1971). An advanced derivative, the T-84, continues to be produced in Ukraine. The T-80 and its variants are in service in Belarus, Cyprus, Kazakhstan[6], Pakistan, Russia, South Korea, and Ukraine.
