China market may be breeding ground for deadly viruses

Posted by Matt in December 10th, 2007

Welcome to the Qingping market in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, where everything from turtles to insects are sold alongside fowl and freshly caught fish.

An outbreak of the SARS virus in 2002 resulted in a local gourmet favourite — the civet — being banished to the black market. The racoon-like animal was blamed for spreading SARS, which infected 8,000 people globally and killed 800.

Chinese state media has reported 34 deaths and the number of infected individuals has jumped to 25,000. Here's more. STORY: The latest deaths occurred in the hardest-hit area of central Anhui Province. 22 children have already died of the disease here and over a hundred patients remain in critical condition. Hand, foot and mouth is a common illness among children, but the current outbreak is linked with Enterovirus 71 (EV71). This increases the severity of the disease resulting in high fever, paralysis and meningitis. CCP authorities delayed announcing the outbreak until late April, triggering memories of the deadly SARS epidemic of 2003. CCP officials have now issued...

Possible Cover-up in China Milk Scandal
More babies are getting sick from tainted Chinese milk power. And as the confirmed number of sick continues to rise, some details of the scandal suggest that communist officials may have known about the tainted milk over a month before they notified the public. Here's more: STORY: Chinese officials have said that roughly 53,000 children have been affected by drinking tainted baby formula. Over 100 are said to be in critical condition and to date there have been four confirmed deaths. The poisonous powdered milk was produced by Sanlu Group, one of China's largest dairy distributors. The formula was made toxic by the addition of melamine, a substance used in various plastics and flame retardant materials. Ingestion of melamine has been shown to cause the formation of kidney stones and, in...

Beijing Lapdogs - China
May 2006 They were banned during the cultural revolution, perceived as bourgeoisie. But now pet dogs are making a comeback in China where they are seen as child substitutes. "We look after our son when it's necessary but our dog suffered a lot before so we love him more", states one woman. For many families limited by the one-child policy, dogs have become the new children. The pet market in China is worth over $2 bn. But there is a downside to the dog explosion. Rabies has become the most dangerous infectious disease in China, surpassing even AIDS. Ten per cent of Chinese dogs are thought to be infected and as many as 6,000 people a month are attacked by dogs in Beijing.

Mad Cow Disease?
The media is talking about the recall of millions of pounds of beef from american markets because of animal cruelty? Does it seem suspicious to anybody that the animals they were being cruel to were exhibiting the classic symptoms of mad cow disease? Does it seem strange to anybody that we are getting millions of pounds of beef from chinese slaughterhouses with absolutely no oversight from the FDA? Attention! Commenting and rating has been disabled on this video! I did not do this, I don't know who did, and I don't know how to undo it, because I cannot find the option to allow commenting and rating on this video anywhere! Is this a bug on Youtube, or is this something more sinister? I don't know, but this is the first time this has happened to me so far... Ok, commenting is back...

China's Cancer Drug - China
May 2007 Cancer patients are traveling to China hoping that controversial gene therapy Gendicine may prove a miracle cure. But western scientists are very reluctant to back the therapy which remains available only in China. Philomina Moniz was given six months to live by Australian doctors. Her bladder cancer had spread into her abdomen, and there seemed no chance of controlling further spread. She heard of the Gendicine treatment in an article on the internet, and traveled to China where she was given an 80% chance of survival. Professor John Rasko admits that, "In cancer medicine it's always important to allow for hope", but he worries that there is still "no compelling evidence" that Gendicine is the miracle cure it is billed as. The treatment does not come cheap with a full course...

"They are not paying any attention to the people's health. Their so-called administrative method is a ruse to fool people. In order to maintain their own benefits, local officials let the people suffer. I think that all this suffering is connected with our political system, one that lacks media transparency."
