Israeli intel warns of waning support in the West

For the first time since the 1960s, Israel’s intelligence community has raised the prospect that the West could abandon its support of a Jewish state.

Officials said the intelligence assessment determined that European Union officials regard Israel as the main reason for the Western crisis with Iran, Middle East Newsline reported. They said Israel has become the focus of Iran and other Muslim states in what could result in a nuclear war in the Middle East.

Israel locks down West Bank village over protests - 6 Jul 08
Israeli troops are sealing off the Palestinian village of Ni'lin in the occupied West Bank. Villagers in Ni'lin are trying to stop the latest stretch of Israel's separation wall from cutting them off from their farmland. Israel says the barrier is being built to keep out Palestinian suicide bombers. Construction sites are flashpoints for confrontations between Israeli security forces and Palestinians, who are often supported by left-wing protesters from Israel and abroad. David Chater, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the West Bank, filed this exclusive report.

Israel "to remove" some West Bank checkpoints - 30 Mar 08
Israel has agreed to remove about 50 of its more than 500 checkpoints in the occupied West Bank - a move it says is designed to help the Palestinian economy. The announcement came on what Palestinians call Land Day, an annual day of protest triggered by the deaths of six Arabs during a demonstration in 1976.
