MIRV-ing Topol — Part 1

Posted by Matt in December 31st, 2007

An anti-missile shield, or America’s ambition to establish one in Europe, has become the event of the year in security and strategic terms. The most discussed subject in Russia has been an adequate but asymmetrical response.

To counter several interceptor missiles and a radar station in Europe, Russia has repeatedly said it will build up its strategic offensive capability.

Now it is deploying a new intercontinental ballistic missile RS-24 with multiple individually targetable warheads. “The RS-24 will boost the Strategic Missile Force’s ability to penetrate the missile defense system,” Colonel Alexander Vovk, head of the Force’s information service, said in mid-December.

US Anti-Missile Shield vs Russian Federation Topol-M
http://www.youtube.com/PowerRussia US Anti Missile Shield. National Missile Defense (NMD) as a generic term is a military strategy and associated systems to shield an entire country against incoming Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). The missiles could be intercepted by other missiles, or possibly by lasers. They could be intercepted near the launch point (boost phase), during flight through space (mid-course phase), or during atmospheric descent (terminal phase). Russian Federation RT-2UTTKh «Topol-M» (Russian: РТ-2УТТХ «Тополь-М») is one of the most recent intercontinental ballistic missiles to be deployed by Russia (see RS-24), and the first to be developed after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In its Russian designation РТ stands for "ракета...

Belarus may host Russian missiles
Russian Iskander missiles could be supplied to Belarus in response to U.S. plans for a missile shield, according to Russia's Defence Ministry. A spokesman says it would also compensate for nuclear and conventional missiles destroyed as part of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with the U.S.

Russian Submarine
Russian nuclear submarines in training start-up of ballistic missiles in the Arctic Ocean. NATO apparently derived the name 'Typhoon' from a 1974 speech by Leonid Brezhnev which mentioned a new SSBN called the "Tayfun". In fact, the Russian name for the class is "Akula" -- "Shark". During the Cold War the Typhoon submarines prowled the waters of the North Atlantic. The Typhoon is the world's largest submarine and was one of the most feared weapons of the Cold War. Each submarine is capable of carrying twenty long-range ballistic missiles RSM-52 ( SS-N-20 ballistic missiles, now SS-N-28 new Russian ballistic missiles) with up to 200 nuclear warheads that were once aimed at the United States. The design of the Typhoon submarine is multi-hulled and bears resemblance to a catamaran. The...

Topol-M SS-27 Missile ICBM
The single-warhead Topol-M is an advanced version of the silo-based and mobile Topol intercontinental ballistic missile. The solid-propellant three- stage Topol-M missile complex, with a standardized (silo and mobile) missile, is to become the foundation of the Russian strategic nuclear forces in the 21st century. It is planned to accommodate Topol-M both on self-propelled launchers as well as in silos. High survivability of the mobile complex is achieved by the capability of offroad movement, of a continuous change in location and of a missile launch from any point along the movement route. The Moscow Institute of Heat Engineering (MIT) State Enterprise is the only plant in Russia building such missiles today. The modernized 45-ton Topol-M is the first strategic missile to be built by...

U.N. HAS CONDEMNED RUSSIAN MILITARY ATTACK ON GEORGIA
Georgia said radar data proved Russian jets violated its airspace Monday and fired a missile aimed at a Georgian radar. The missile, which did not explode, landed close to a village in the northwestern Gori region near Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia, which is patrolled by Russian peacekeepers. Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky, the chief of Russia's military General Staff, said Wednesday that Georgia concocted the incident to foment tensions. "I'm convinced that it was a provocation by Georgia... a provocation against the Russian peacekeepers and Russia as a whole," Baluyevsky said on a visit to China, according to the ITAR-Tass news agency. In Tbilisi, Levan Nikoleishvili, Georgia's first deputy defense minister, told The Associated Press that Baluyevsky's statement was "sheer...

NATO expansion a 'direct threat to Russia' - Putin
President Putin says NATO's expansion eastwards is a direct threat to Russia's security. He made the comment after talks between Moscow and NATO broke up without agreement in Romania. One of the major sticking points is NATO's support for a U.S. anti-missile defence system in Europe.
