China Launches New Communications Satellite
A Chinese Long March 3B rocket successfully placed the Chinasat-9 direct-broadcast television satellite into geostationary transfer orbit June 9 - a launch that caused public-relations discomfort for both Chinese authorities and satellite builder Thales Alenia Space, for different reasons. Chinasat 9, a Spacebus 4000 satellite platform, is expected to operate for 15 years at 92.2 degrees east longitude. Chinese government authorities have been upset with the French government in recent weeks following a demonstration-marred passage of the Olympic flame through Paris in April and the near-simultaneous decision by the Paris city council to make the Dalai Lama an honorary citizen - an act that the Chinese Foreign Ministry termed "a grave provocation." For that reason, industry officials...

China launches 2nd Olympic weather satellite
TAIYUAN, May 27 -- China launched a second Olympic weather forecasting satellite, the Fengyun-3 (FY-3), Tuesday morning. The satellite was launched on a Long March-4C carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province at 11:02 a.m. (Beijing Time). It entered the preset orbit 27 minutes later. Gao Huoshan, general director of the FY-3 research team, said the satellite would send back images with the highest spatial resolution of 250 meters and its temperature sensitivity would reach 0.1 degree Fahrenheit. Both indices were close to the most advanced level of similar satellites in the world. The highest spatial resolution of existing satellites in China had been 1.1 kilometers, according to Gao. "The 250-m resolution images will...

China launches 2nd Olympic weather satellite
China successfully launched its Fengyun three Meteorological Satellite, its second Olympic weather satellite, at the Launching Center in Taiyuan this morning. It will be put to use during the Beijing Olympic Games to help predict the weather. The Fengyun three series of satellites is China's second generation of Polar-Orbiting Meteorological Satellites. The FY-3 satellites are able to provide global sounding of 3-dimensional thermal structures of the atmosphere. Their global imaging technology also supports short-range weather forecasting and real-time monitoring of meteorological or hydrological disasters. And they can also provide the necessary data to derive important geophysical parameters and support researchers on global and climate change. A China Meteorological Administration...
