January 28, 2008, 5:38 PM (GMT+02:00)

DEBKAfile’s military and Middle East sources report that Monday, Jan. 28, as the Palestinian surge across the Gaza-Sinai border veered out of control, Cairo blockaded the Sinai Peninsula and the Suez Canal. The ferry service and other shipping between Egypt and the Sinai coast were shut down.

Sinai highways were closed as Egyptian security forces arrested some 4,000 Palestinians on the move south of El Arish and found in places between this town and the Suez Canal and Sharm el-Sheikh.

Rafah - Gaza's Swiss Cheese - Tunnel Smuggling A Profitable
Since pulling out of the Gaza Strip in September 2005, Israel continues to monitor the situation along the Gaza border but is unable to prevent the massive network of tunnels from sprouting up along the narrow Gaza-Egypt border, used to smuggle terrorists, explosives and weapons as well as drugs and other goods into Gaza. Egypt powerless to prevent the tunnel smuggling  has perhaps realized a little too late that it should have taken harsher action earlier. In recent weeks US troops worked together with Egyptian forces and using state of the art technology uncovered and destroyed 42 smuggling tunnels along the 14 kilometer border with Egypt. 10/06/08
