Posted by Matt in February 29th, 2008

Russia - The New Energy Frontier
May 2006 The island of Sakhalin, home to Russia's first ever liquid gas plant, has become the world's newest energy frontier. But residents claim their own needs are being ignored. When completed, the Sakhalin Energy plant will be one of the biggest integrated oil and gas projects in the world. But locals expect to see none of the benefits. "All the money will go to foreigners and to Moscow. We'll only lose out", complains one resident. They were initially promised 40% of the profits but now this money will go directly to Moscow. People have had to abandon their homes without compensation and there are claims the pipelines have already polluted the environment. Residents won't even have access to the gas produced. As one local complains: "Our needs aren't being considered."

BUSH IS A LIAR! TREASON ! NUCLEAR IRAN / RUSSIA SCANDAL
House Committee on Energy: "Only this Administration would complain about proliferation in Iran, as part of President Bush's nuclear axis of evil, and then finance it with American taxpayer dollars," said Dingell. "Heads should roll." Washington, DC -- A highly touted Department of Energy (DOE) nonproliferation program, which is intended to keep Soviet-era scientists from migrating to rogue states following the collapse of the Soviet Union, has been funding Russian research institutes that support nuclear projects in Iran, two key lawmakers said today in a letter to Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman. Reps. John D. Dingell (D-MI), Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Bart Stupak (D-MI), Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, wrote Bodman regarding the...

Russia fleet eyes Arctic resources - 17 July 2008
Russia is sending warships to patrol the Arctic for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Moscow claims it's a security measure and not an aggressive move. But critics say it's simply a flag waving excercise in Russia's campaign to lay claim to the Arctic's vast energy reserves. Richard Bestic reports.

The Rise of China, India & Russia: The Next American Century
http://www.nextamericancentury.com/ The rise of other global powers is most often posed as a sorry tale. The potential loss of our #1 status implies a blow to our safety, economy, and prestige. In The Next American Century, Nina Hachigian and Mona Sutphen show that the "pivotal powers"—China, Europe, India, Japan, and Russia—seek greater influence, but each has an enormous stake in the world economy and a keen desire to thwart common threats.
