Hamas Pursues Dangerous Strategy with Ashkelon Attacks

Posted by Matt in March 4th, 2008

With its rocket attacks on Ashkelon, Hamas has chosen a very risky strategy. Israel cannot tolerate a big city coming under daily rocket fire. Jerusalem must now decide whether to negotiate or go to war. By Ulrike Putz in Gaza City more…

Hamas-Israel ceasefire brings hope to Gaza - 18 Jun 08
Israel has confirmed it has agreed to a six-month truce with Palestinian armed groups including Hamas, the country's public radio service has reported. Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister and Ehud Barak, defence minister, approved the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire a day after Egyptian and Palestinian officials announced a deal. The Palestinian territory's been the scene of deadly clashes with the Israeli army since a Hamas takeover last year. Egypt, which has worked for months to broker the deal, is urging both sides to do everything they can to make the peace last. Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Gaza on the Egyptian-brokered peace deal.

Women of Hamas - Israel/Palestine
April 2006 Tired of years of endemic corruption, Palestinian women are turning their backs on Fatah and supporting Hamas. But having voted for change, the pressure is now on Hamas to deliver. When Nahida Sleibi's husband was injured, Hamas was the only organisation who came to her help. "Hamas is able to reach out to women through financial assistance", explains politician Intisar Al-Wazir. It runs a network of schools and hospitals which have a reputation for being efficient and corruption free. But while its social policies won it the female vote, rumours Hamas plans to implement Sharia Law have alienated some women. Others are worried about the financial implications of its rigid foreign policy. As Nuha states: "We're concerned the international community will reject us and things...

Hamas Victory - Israel/Palestine
April 2006 Are we witnessing a new political movement in the Middle East? The pressure is now on Hamas to transform itself into a recognised legitimate government. "It's like a big political Tsunami hitting the whole region", states Palestinian Dr Iyad Saraj. Ten years of failures have left many despondent with the political process. "Jewish settlements are expanding, corruption is getting worse", despairs former Fatah supporter, Omar Shaker. In comparison to Fatah, Hamas is seen as clean and uncorrupt. Despite its involvement in violence, its elevation to a legitimate, elected political party could be the start of a new direction for the region. As Sharon's former security advisor states: "These gentlemen are serious people. We can have common ground."

Inside Gaza - Israel/Palestine
Oct 2007 With Fatah and Hamas so divided, will the recent peace talks achieve anything? There are warnings Hamas will attempt to disrupt the summit by stepping up rocket attacks. From a wooded valley in Gaza, Al Aqsa fighters light a rocket fuse. Everyone runs for their lives as the rocket shoots off into Israel. Later, safe in his office, Al Aqsa's commander shows us how he selects targets in Israel. "We obtain details from Google Earth and check them against our maps". For Gaza's residents, life seems to get harder by the day. Supplies are dwindling thanks to an economic blockade. Fatah claims Hamas is turning Gaza into a brutal police state. It has ordered all medical staff to go on strike. But for the sick, denying them medical care is a step too far. As one women laments; "What have...

Farfour "martyred" by Israelis in final episode
This is the last episode of the infamous "Farfour" - Hamas' copycat version of the beloved 1928 Disney creation Mickey Mouse. Farfour has been used to promote a radical Islamic supremacist agenda, and to ferment Jihadist sentiments in Palestinian children. Farfour first came into international spotlight in May 2007, when Palestinian Media Watch (http://www.pmw.org.il) released a translated video from Al Aqsa TV (a Hamas-owned station) that showed the plagiarised cartoon character. Worldwide condemnation followed over this apparent child indoctrination. Hamas, however, refused to pull Farfour off the air, and immediately broadcasted another episode of Farfour on May 11. On June 29, 2007, Farfour featured for the last time and was "martyred" by an...

The shark and the fish/ Israel Palestine story
This video was released by the Israeli Consulate in New York. The children are reading a story that was written by Gilad Shalit, a soldier who has been held by Hamas since his kidnap in 2006. Written when he was eleven, the story is a tale of a fish and a shark making friends. There's an obvious comparison to be drawn with the Israel-Palestine conflict, although each camp will no doubt interpret it differently. http://observers.france24.com/en/content/20080626-soldier-gilad-shalit-kidnap-hamas-israel-palestine
