World war 2

World war II or the Second World war was a global military conflict, the joining of what had initially been two separate conflicts. It first began in Asia in 1937 as the Second Sino-Japanese War; the other began in Europe in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland.

This global conflict split the majority of the world’s nations into opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis powers. It involved the mobilization of over 100 million military personnel, making it the most widespread war in history, and placed the participants in a state of “total war”, erasing the distinction between civil and military resources. This resulted in the complete activation of a nation’s economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities for the purposes of the war effort. Over 70 million people, the majority of them civilians, were killed, making it the deadliest conflict in human history. The financial cost of the war is estimated at about a trillion 1944 U.S. dollars worldwide, making it the most costly war in capital as well as lives.

The Allies were victorious, and, as a result, the Soviet Union and the United States emerged as the world’s leading superpowers. This set the stage for the Cold War, which lasted for the next 45 years. The United Nations was formed in the hope of preventing another such conflict. The self determination spawned by the war accelerated decolonization movements in Asia and Africa, while Western Europe itself began moving toward integration.

BBC - World War II - Battle Of Britain
The Battle of Britain (German: Luftschlacht um England) is the name given to the sustained strategic effort by the German Luftwaffe during the summer and autumn of 1940 to gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force (RAF), especially Fighter Command. The name derives from a speech made on 18 June 1940 in the House of Commons by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, "The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin..."[4] Had it been successful, the planned amphibious and airborne landings in Britain of Operation Sealion would have followed. The Battle of Britain was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces. It was the largest and most sustained bombing campaign attempted up until that date. The failure of Nazi Germany to destroy Britain's...

BBC - World War II - Atom Bomb
A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from the nuclear reaction of fission or from a combination of fission and fusion. Both reactions release vast quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter; a modern thermonuclear weapon weighing little more than a ton can produce an explosion comparable to the detonation of more than a billion kilograms of conventional high explosive[1]. The largest nuclear weapon ever detonated, the Tsar Bomba, had a yield of approximately 50 megatons of TNT and even small nuclear devices with yields equivalent to only a few thousand tons of TNT can devastate a city. Because of their extreme destructive power, nuclear devices are weapons of mass destruction. In the history of warfare, only two nuclear weapons have...

BBC: UN & Dutch disaster in Srebrenica
SREBRENICA REPORT- Dutch Government Collapses Saturday, May 18, 2002 The release of a report on April 10th into the Srebrenica horror exploded like a Serb artillery shell in the market place of Dutch politics on April 10th. The Dutch government report blamed Dutch army officers for relinquishing control of the UN declared "safe haven" to the Serb forces in July 1995 despite their own fears of a massacre. The peacekeeping mission that was supposed to protect the town of Srebrenica, swollen by thousands of refugees from outlying villages, ended in a week long orgy of murder by Serb troops led by Ratko Mladic. The government was also blamed for sending its peacekeeping troops into BiH without a clearly defined mission and blamed the UN for failing to give the troops enough support to...
