Regional Nuclear War Would Affect Entire Globe

Posted by Matt in April 7th, 2008

Devastation of a regional nuclear war would be far from confined to the countries that started it. Plants and animals, including humans, would be endangered by a global ozone hole that would result and persist for years after all the bombs were exhausted, a new study suggests.

The layer of ozone high up in the Earth’s atmosphere absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun before it hits the Earth’s surface. Without it, almost all lifeforms would be bombarded by this energetic radiation, and though more research needs to be done into the specific effects of a significant ozone depletion, increased UV radiation can damage DNA and has been linked to the most common forms of skin cancer, as well as melanoma (the most lethal skin cancer) and cataracts.

Limited nuclear war would damage ozone layer

Apart from the human devastation, a small-scale nuclear war between India and Pakistan would destroy much of the ozone layer, leaving the DNA of humans and other organisms at risk of damage from the Sun’s rays, say researchers.

Last year, co-author Brian Toon, also of the University of Colorado, showed that such a nuclear war would have a devastating effect on global food stocks.

High-Altitude Nuclear Weapon Effects Part One
0800066 - High-Altitude Nuclear Weapon Effects Part One - Phenomenology - 1963 - 20:53 - Color - When nuclear weapons are detonated at high altitudes, they cause dramatic changes in the atmosphere and ionosphere. In a very technical presentation, this video discusses such things as the interactions of electrons and positive ions and shows the electromagnetic regions and how they carry electrical charges from one hemisphere to another. The video also discusses how there is much information unknown about nuclear explosions at extremely high altitudes, especially above 250 kilometers, where there is less atmospheric resistance.

C&C Red Alert: A Path Beyond - Nuclear Winter
Project Nuclear winter: In an effort to freeze out the Soviet invaders, the Allied army used all their Demolition Trucks in this experiment. Trying to create a Nuclear Winter by detonating all their A-Bombs at once, covering the atmosphere with a thick layer of ash and debris, causing an artificial winter. About Nuclear Fallout 1955
Attempt to dispel many common myths and fallacies about radioactive fallout. a Fallout is the residual radiation hazard from a nuclear explosion, so named because it "falls out" of the atmosphere into which it is spread during the explosion. It commonly refers to the radioactive dust created when a nuclear weapon explodes. This radioactive dust, consisting of hot particles, is a kind of radioactive contamination. It can lead to contamination of the food chain. Fallout can also refer to the dust or debris that results from the nuclear explosion. Producer: Wilding Picture Productions, Inc.

Nuclear Test (Atomic Bomb) - WWW.OLOSCIENCE.COM
[ http://www.oloscience.com ] Nuclear tests are experiments carried out to determine the effectiveness, yield and explosive capability of nuclear weapons. Throughout the twentieth century, most nations that have developed nuclear weapons have tested them. Testing nuclear weapons can yield information about how the weapons work, as well as how the weapons behave under various conditions and how structures behave when subjected to nuclear explosions. Additionally, nuclear testing has often been used as an indicator of scientific and military strength, and many tests have been overtly political in their intention; most nuclear weapons states publicly declared their nuclear status by means of a nuclear test. The first atomic test was detonated by the United States at the Trinity site on July...

On the Beach (1959) - Gregory Peck & Ava Gardner
Scene from the film. The story is set in 1964, what was then the near future (1963 in the book) in the months following World War III. The conflict has devastated the northern hemisphere, polluting the atmosphere with nuclear fallout and killing all life. While the nuclear bombs were confined to the northern hemisphere, global air currents are slowly carrying the fallout to the southern hemisphere. The only part of the planet still habitable is the far south of the globe, specifically Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, and the southern parts of South America. From Australia, survivors detect a mysterious and incomprehensible Morse code radio signal originating from the United States. With hope that some life has remained in the contaminated regions, one of the last American nuclear...

Atmosphere - Sunshine
One of my favourites! I changed the title from "Nothing but sunshine" to plain "Sunshine" cause a lot of people search this song and type just "sunshine" and different results come up...enjoy y'all! [Slug] (Mixed vocals) Whatta you mean what was my childhood like? What difference does that make? Yo, my childhood was messed up, so what? Everybody's childhood was messed up. This is the 90's, find me one person who had it right. What's that got to do with me rhyming? What's left? [Slug] Now when my mother died I had to take it in stride There ain't no room for pride in watching your father cry And dad made it until maybe a year later When they found his suicide inside of a grain elevator Got over it, I had no other offers or options Thought about whether or not mom and pop was...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Plumbob-Hood 74kt
Hood was the largest atmospheric test ever conducted at NTS (and in continental U.S.). This was a test of a two-stage thermonuclear device designed by UCRL (University of California Radiation Laboratory), even though the U.S. government stated at the time that no thermonuclear tests were being conducted in Nevada. The design was intended to fill a gap in 300-400 lb. thermonuclear warhead technology, and was tested at reduced yield. The predicted yield was 60-80 kt. The device used a boosted Swan primary (which gave yields of 12-19 kt in other tests during Plumbbob). About 7 kt of the overall yield was from fusion. The device was a small diameter system (12.1 inches) and was 42.2 inches long. Total device weight was 393 lb. The test also included troop maneuvers by 2500 Marines, and air...

Anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Catastrophe
ANCHOR:
On April 26, 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine exploded. Thousands of lives were lost in a nuclear meltdown that sent highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere across international borders. It is not the disaster itself that Russians talk about most, but the slow process of recovering. Our correspondents from Saint Petersburg have more details. STORY:
Residents of Saint Petersburg gathered at the Victims of Radiation Catastrophes monument last Saturday to commemorate those who died during the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant explosion. 22 years later this catastrophe is still having an impact on people's lives and health. [Mr Kuleshov, Mine Worker]: male

Larijani: Iran's Nuclear Case Could be Sent Back to IAEA
Larijani: Iran's Nuclear Case Could be Sent Back to IAEA. Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani urged all sides in Iran's nuclear case to take "precise steps" to prevent adoption of a new resolution. Speaking to reporters at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport upon his arrival from a seven-day visit to Europe on Tuesday night, the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Ali Larijani said, "The general atmosphere prevailing over settlement of Iran's nuclear case has become more rational." During the talks in Madrid, he said, the two sides discussed ways to make use of current atmosphere and potentials and manage the situation in a way to move in a more logical direction. He said Iran should also help materialize the wisdom. Larijani termed as "acceptable" the current...

Half-Life² - Cold War scars, Episode 1
The effects of a second Cold War The Story is this: The second Cold War started in the year 2060. The cause was that a diplomat of Russia and several scientist dissapeared on there way to U.S.A. America denied that they would have ever reached the White House or even the airport. But Russia suspected them for the missing people and declared war on U.S.A. after several miss understandings. Only after a year since the war started Russia launched a nuclear weapon which hit somewhere on the western coast of America killing people and destroying structures. In response U.S.A launched there one nuclear weapon on Russia which hit somewhere to the north of Moscow at 200km distance, but with effect, eradicating some small towns and a important city. In the year 2067 U.S.A invaded Russia sieging...

Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella
Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear war? WARNING: This material is not suitable for younger audiences. An artistic, educational montage of the official UK government advice. Ensure to turn up your sound so that the music soundtrack is audible. Produced in the late 1970s, "Protect and Survive" was the epithet of a pamphlet and twenty short Public Information Films (PIFs), published by the Central Office for Information of the British Government, providing advice to civilians of what to do in the event of a nuclear conflict. The pamphlet was briefly made available then very rapidly withdrawn from sale, in light of ensuing public reaction ("your exercise in futility is to not run, go home, hide under (your bed) and please curl up and die quietly."). The PIFs have never been...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Gnome-3.1kt
Credit Must Go To Peter Kuran Producer/Director For this footage. Project GNOME was the first nuclear explosion to be used for peaceful purposes. It was detonated on December 10, 1961 near Carlsbad, New Mexico, as part of the Operation Nougat test series. It helped expand knowledge of nuclear detonations underground, helped scientists study the possibility of converting heat produced by a nuclear explosion into steam for the production of electric power, helped scientists explore the feasibility of recovering radioisotopes for the scientific and industrial applications and used the high flux of neutrons produced by the detonation for a variety of measurements that contributed to scientific knowledge in general and to the reactor development program. The GNOME device was placed 1,184 feet...

Nuclear Weapons Test-Redwing-Cherokee 3.8mt
Cherokee Shot 3.8mt This was the first U.S. air drop of a thermonuclear weapon. This DOD sponsored test (using an LASL designed device) was intended to gather weapon effects data for high yield air bursts, but also was a political demonstration of the United States capability to deliver H-bombs by air to pressure the Soviet Union. The weapon used was a TX-15-X1 weapon similar to the lower yield Zombie device tested in Castle Nectar. The B-52 was flown from Fred Island at Eniwetak. The intended ground zero was directly over Namu Island, but the flight crew mistook an observation facility on a different island for their targeting beacon with the result that the weapon delivery was grossly in error. The bomb detonated some 4 miles off target over the ocean northeast of Namu. As a result...

The solution is very simple. Let’s not have a nuclear war. Everyone, please tell George Bush we don’t like him playing with his
NOOKULAR TOYS. He doesn’t know how dangerous they can be.
