Israeli and Egyptian forces on high alert on Gaza borders over Hamas threats

Posted by Matt in April 13th, 2008

Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshaal voiced this threat Saturday, April 12.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the raid by Palestinian gunmen on the Israeli-Gaza fuel terminal - and murder of two of its employees, Oleg Lipson and Lev Cerniak - were meant to set the stage for a mass Hamas assault on the Gaza-Israeli border. Earlier this year, Hamas organized a “popular demonstration” of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who smashed their way through the Egyptian border to Sinai. After forcing Israel to close the fuel terminal, the Gaza population’s main source of fuel by its attack last Wednesday, Hamas plans to stage a mass protest against purported fuel shortages which is designed to end up flattening the border fence with Israel.

Inside Gaza - Israel/Palestine
Oct 2007 With Fatah and Hamas so divided, will the recent peace talks achieve anything? There are warnings Hamas will attempt to disrupt the summit by stepping up rocket attacks. From a wooded valley in Gaza, Al Aqsa fighters light a rocket fuse. Everyone runs for their lives as the rocket shoots off into Israel. Later, safe in his office, Al Aqsa's commander shows us how he selects targets in Israel. "We obtain details from Google Earth and check them against our maps". For Gaza's residents, life seems to get harder by the day. Supplies are dwindling thanks to an economic blockade. Fatah claims Hamas is turning Gaza into a brutal police state. It has ordered all medical staff to go on strike. But for the sick, denying them medical care is a step too far. As one women laments; "What have...

Gaza Tunnels - Israel/Palestine
Mar 2008 Most of Hamas' weapons are smuggled in through tunnels between Gaza and Egypt. These tunnels are usually dug by children, who know they could be killed at any moment. Every night, 14 year old Said scrambles down a narrow shaft leading to a tunnel. He'll spend the next eight hours digging without a break. It's claustrophobic, difficult work. The heat in the tunnel is unbearable and the more they advance, the harder it becomes to breathe. At any moment, the tunnel could come crashing down, burying them alive. That's not the only danger. "Sometime the Egyptians shoot gas into the tunnel that might kill us", states Ramdan. "There are risks of electric shocks and the Israelis might bomb the entrance". Since Hamas seized control of Gaza, the borders have been closed. The tunnels are...

Inside Story - Attack on Gaza - 02 Mar 08 - Pt. 1
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has suspended peace talks with Israel, demanding that it ends its offensive on Gaza. Israel's five-day offensive on the Gaza Strip has so far killed more than 100 Palestinians, many of them civilians. Israel claims it is acting in self-defence in response to cross-border rocket attacks by Hamas. But Israel has been strongly criticized by the European Union and United Nations, who have condemned its use of "excessive" and "disproportionate" force. Inside Story, with presenter Sami Zeidan, examines the possible outcomes.

Gaza Under Siege - Israel/Palestine
February 2001 One of the most densely populated places on earth, the Gaza Strip is home to over a million Palestinians - and is a virtual prison. Just 43 kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide, most of its residents are refugees who've lived in camps since 1948. Since the Palestinian uprising - the second Intifada - began in September 2000, none of Gaza's 40,000 day labourers have been able to cross the border to Israel. The checkpoint is also closed to all goods and medical supplies coming in from Israel and the West Bank. Local Gazans bear the brunt of Israel's determination to quash the uprising. Some 135 Palestinian children under the age of 15 have been killed by Israel's soldiers - for throwing stones at checkpoints near Israeli settlements. In this episode, Life visits Reyidh and...

Israel denies Gaza attack responsibility - 29 April 08
The father of four children killed in Gaza is rejecting denials from Israel that it was responsible. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has expressed deep sorrow, but says the Hamas tactic of launching rocket barrages from densely populated areas is to blame. Ahmed Abu Meg-teg lost four children and his wife as his house in the Gaza Strip was torn apart by a huge explosion. He described to Al Jazeera, what happened. However, Israel has a different version of events. David Chater has been trying to piece together what really happened in Beit Hanoun.

Inside Story - Gaza humanitarian crisis - Nov 14 - Part 1
Inside Story questions the 'blame game' being played by the parties while the people of Gaza continue to suffer. Israel has refused permission for a convoy of trucks containing basic humanitarian supplies to deliver their loads to the Gaza Strip. Initially, the authorities had said they would allow passage for the 30 truckloads of drugs and food. As the United Nations warns that it is going to run out of food for its aid programmes, all the parties, Hamas, Fatah, Israel and Egypt are blaming one another for the mounting humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Israel has said that as long as rocket fire continues from Gaza into Israel, the border crossings will stay closed. The UN insists that this amounts to collective punishment, which is illegal under international law. Christopher...
